  • Analogy and the Generation of Ideas

Keith J Holyoak, Nicholas Ichien et al.•ARTICLE•Creativity Research Journal•2024

Creativity is typically defined as the generation of novel and useful ideas or artifacts. This generative capacity is crucial to everyday problem solving, technological innovation, scientific discovery, and the arts. A central concern of cognitive scientists is to understand the processes that underlie human creative thinking. We review evidence that one process contributing to human creativity is the ability to generate novel representations of …

  • Large Language Model Displays Emergent Ability to Interpret Novel Literary Metaphors

Open Access•Nicholas Ichien, Dušan Stamenković et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2024

Despite the exceptional performance of large language models (LLMs) on a wide range of tasks involving natural language processing and reasoning, there has been sharp disagreement as to whether their abilities extend to more creative human abilities. A core example is the interpretation of novel metaphors. Here we assessed the ability of GPT-4, a state-of-the-art large language model, to provide natural-language interpretations of a recent AI ben…

  • Conceptual Change Induced by Analogical Reasoning Sparks Aha Moments

Christine Chesebrough, Evangelia G Chrysikou et al.•ARTICLE•Creativity Research Journal•2023

An underexplored aspect of the relationship between analogical reasoning and creativity is its phenomenology; in particular, the notion that analogical reasoning is related to insight and its associated “aha!” experience. However, the relationship between these phenomena has never been directly investigated. We adapted a set of verbal analogy stimuli for use as an insight task. Across the two experiments, participants reported stronger aha moment…

  • Poet and Psychologist

    Keith J Holyoak•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2023

I consider poetry composition from both the “inside” view of a poet and the “outside” view of a cognitive psychologist. From the perspective of a psychologist, I review behavioral and neural studies of the reception and generation of poetry, with emphasis on metaphor and symbolism. Taking the perspective of a poet, I discuss how the seeds for a poem may arise. Finally, I consider the prospects for future developments in a field of computational n…

  • An Individual-Differences Approach to Poetic Metaphor

Dušan Stamenković, Katarina Milenković et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2023

Using poetic metaphors in the Serbian language, we identified systematic variations in the impact of fluid and crystalized intelligence on comprehension of metaphors that varied in rated aptness and familiarity. Overall, comprehension scores were higher for metaphors that were high rather than low in aptness, and high rather than low in familiarity. A measure of crystalized intelligence was a robust predictor of comprehension across the full rang…

Open Access•Kinga Morsanyi, Jayne Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2022•Referências: 58

We examined the relationship between metaphor comprehension and verbal analogical reasoning in young adults who were either typically developing (TD) or diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ASD sample was highly educated and high in verbal ability, and closely matched to a subset of TD participants on age, gender, educational background, and verbal ability. Additional TD participants with a broader range of abilities were also teste…

  • Individual Differences in Comprehension of Contextualized Metaphors

Dušan Stamenković, Nicholas Ichien et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2020

We report a study examining the role of linguistic context in modulating the influences of individual differences in fluid and crystalized intelligence on comprehension of literary metaphors. Three conditions were compared: no context, metaphor-congruent context, and literal-congruent context. Relative to the baseline no-context condition, the metaphor-congruent context facilitated comprehension of the metaphorical meaning whereas the literal-con…

  • The Spider's Thread

    Keith J Holyoak•BOOK•Spider's Thread•2019

An examination of metaphor in poetry as a microcosm of the human imagination—a way to understand the mechanisms of creativity. In The Spider's Thread, Keith Holyoak looks at metaphor as a microcosm of the creative imagination. Holyoak, a psychologist and poet, draws on the perspectives of thinkers from the humanities—poets, philosophers, and critics—and from the sciences—psychologists, neuroscientists, linguists, and computer scientists. He begin…

  • Metaphor comprehension

    Keith J Holyoak, Dušan Stamenković•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2018

We review psychological research bearing on major theories of metaphor comprehension. A broad survey of behavioral studies is coupled with findings from recent meta-analyses of neuroimaging studies of metaphor processing. We identify three broad theoretical positions that have been the foci of research efforts: analogy, categorization, and conceptual mapping. The first two of these emphasize relatively well-specified information-processing models…

  • Deontological coherence

    Keith J Holyoak, Derek Powell•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2016•Citada por: 7

We review a broad range of work, primarily in cognitive and social psychology, that provides insight into the processes of moral judgment. In particular, we consider research on pragmatic reasoning about regulations and on coherence in decision making, both areas in which psychological theories have been guided by work in legal philosophy. Armed with these essential prerequisites, we sketch a psychological framework for how ordinary people make j…

  • Darwin's mistake

    Open Access•Derek C Penn, Keith J Holyoak et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral and Brain Sciences•2008

Over the last quarter century, the dominant tendency in comparative cognitive psychology has been to emphasize the similarities between human and nonhuman minds and to downplay the differences as “one of degree and not of kind” (Darwin 1871). In the present target article, we argue that Darwin was mistaken: the profound biological continuity between human and nonhuman animals masks an equally profound discontinuity between human and nonhuman mind…

  • The transience of constructed preferences

    Open Access•Dan Simon, Daniel C Krawczyk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2007•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

A large body of research suggests that preferences are constructed rather than merely accessed in the course of making decisions. The current research examines the stability of constructed preferences over time. Preferences for various factors relevant to a job choice were measured prior to presentation of the job‐choice task, at the point of decision, and again following a delay. It was found that relative to baseline pre‐decision levels, prefer…

  • A symbolic-connectionist theory of relational inference and generalization

    John E Hummel, Keith J Holyoak•ARTICLE•Psychological Review•2003

The authors present a theory of how relational inference and generalization can be accomplished within a cognitive architecture that is psychologically and neurally realistic. Their proposal is a form of symbolic connectionism: a connectionist system based on distributed representations of concept meanings, using temporal synchrony to bind fillers and roles into relational structures. The authors present a specific instantiation of their theory i…

  • The Analogical Mind

Dedre Gentner, Keith J Holyoak et al.•BOOK•The Analogical Mind•2001

Analogy has been the focus of extensive research in cognitive science over the past two decades. Through analogy, novel situations and problems can be understood in terms of familiar ones. Indeed, a case can be made for analogical processing as the very core of cognition. This is the first book to span the full range of disciplines concerned with analogy. Its contributors represent cognitive, developmental, and comparative psychology; neuroscienc…

  • The analogical mind

    Keith J Holyoak, Paul Thagard•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1997•Citada por: 34

The use of analogy in human thinking is examined from the perspective of a multiconstraint theory, which postulates 3 basic types of constraints: similarity, structure, and purpose. The operation of these constraints is apparent in laboratory experiments on analogy and in naturalistic settings, including politics, psychotherapy, and scientific research. The multiconstraint theory has been implemented in detailed computational simulations of the a…

  • A Coherence Model of Cognitive Consistency

    Open Access•Barbara A Spellman, Jodie B Ullman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1993•Citada por: 2•Referências: 17

We describe Co3 ( Co herence Model of Co gnitive Co nsistency), a computational model that we used to simulate attitudinal shifts toward various factors related to the Persian Gulf War. Co3 is based on “parallel constraint satisfaction,” a mechanism that revises a set of attitudes so as to maximize overall coherence, with each attitude simultaneously influencing every other related attitude. The Gulf War provided a naturalistic case study for exa…

  • If Saddam is Hitler then who is George Bush? Analogical mapping between systems of social roles

    Barbara A Spellman, Keith J Holyoak•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1992•Citada por: 9

The analogy between World War II and the 1991 Persian Gulf crisis led people to construct a coherent system of roles for the participants in the Gulf crisis. The Analogical Constraint Mapping Engine (ACME), a model of analogical mapping by constraint satisfaction (Holyoak & Thagard, 1989), makes predictions about the types of correspondences people are likely to draw between the people and countries in these analogs. Both a survey (Experiment 1) …

  • Analogical Mapping by Constraint Satisfaction

    Open Access•Keith J Holyoak, Paul Thagard•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•1989

A theory of analogical mapping between source and target analogs based upon interacting structural, semantic, and pragmatic constraints is proposed here. The structural constraint of isomorphism encourages mappings that maximize the consistency of relational corresondences between the elements of the two analogs. The constraint of semantic similarity supports mapping hypotheses to the degree that mapped predicates have similar meanings. The const…

    Peter C Gordon, Keith J Holyoak•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1983•Citada por: 14

Two experiments are reported in which the generalization of the mere effect is examined. Both experiments demonstrated that positive affect, produced by repeated viewing of a set of stimuli, generalizes to previously unseen stimuli that are similar along certain abstract dimensions to the exposed stimuli. The first experiment used letter strings constructed according to a complex rule system. Positive affect attributable to exposure generalized t…
