It Pays to Ask Twice: Alcohol Consumption Amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Who Self‐Reported Not Drinking Alcohol
Adapting ‘The Grog App’ to Ask Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples About Their Drinking in Primary Healthcare: A Delphi Study
Acceptability and quality of the ‘Grog Survey App’ brief intervention: Helping Aboriginal Australians reflect on their drinking using a digital health tool
Disparities in Opioid Agonist Treatment Accessibility for Priority Populations in New South Wales, Australia
Electronic screen use and children’s socioemotional problems: A systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
Alcohol screening in 22 Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations: Clinical context and who is screened
Countering stereotypes: Exploring the characteristics of Aboriginal Australians who do not drink alcohol in a community representative sample
Disentangling autonomy-supportive and psychologically controlling parenting: A meta-analysis of self-determination theory’s dual process model across cultures
Self-determination theory's (SDT) dual process model claims that parental autonomy support relates positively to child well-being, while psychologically controlling parenting is linked positively to child ill-being. We tested these claims using a combination of one-stage and univariate meta-analytic structural equation modeling with moderation ( k = 238; n = 1,040, N = 126,423). In the univariate models, parental autonomy support was linked posit…
Walking side‐by‐side: Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians to lead the way in alcohol research
Several initiatives have sought to increase the number of First Nations individuals with a higher degree in research (i.e., PhD or research masters)—in Australia and in similarly colonised countries. However, little has been written on day‐to‐day support structures and mechanisms that might help First Nations Australian candidates thrive in postgraduate research degrees and beyond. For sensitive research fields such as alcohol, emerging Aborigina…
Unintended consequences: Alcohol screening at urban Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services was suppressed during Covid ‐19 lockdowns
Low rates of prescribing alcohol relapse prevention medicines in Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
An umbrella review of the benefits and risks associated with youths’ interactions with electronic screens
Trajectories of Psychological Distress of Men Treated at Aboriginal Residential Rehabilitation Services for Alcohol and Drug Misuse
A meta-analysis of the dark side of the American dream: Evidence for the universal wellness costs of prioritizing extrinsic over intrinsic goals
Patterns of drinking in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as self‐reported on the Grog Survey App: A representative urban and remote sample
Predictors of length of treatment, discharge reason, and re‐admission to Aboriginal alcohol and other drug residential rehabilitation services in New South Wales, Australia
Prevalence and correlates of alcohol dependence in an Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representative sample: Using the Grog Survey App
Indigenous Australian drinking risk: Comparing risk categorisations based on recall of recent drinking occasions to Audit‐C screening in a representative sample
A multi‐methods yarn about SMART Recovery: First insights from Australian Aboriginal facilitators and group members
Paths to the light and dark sides of human nature: A meta-analytic review of the prosocial benefits of autonomy and the antisocial costs of control
Acceptability and feasibility of a computer-based application to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians describe their alcohol consumption
We examined acceptability and feasibility of a tablet application ("App") to record self-reported alcohol consumption among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Four communities (1 urban; 3 regional/remote) tested the App, with 246 adult participants (132 males, 114 females). The App collected (a) completion time; (b) participant feedback; (c) staff observations. Three research assistants were interviewed. Only six (1.4%) participan…
Discrimination as a frame-of-reference effect in overlapping friendship communities of ethnically diverse youth
We provide evidence for a frame-of-reference effect involving discrimination. Individuals' relative standing in their friendship communities with high group-level discrimination reliably predicted the individuals' well-being levels, regardless of ethnicity. The results highlight the importance of identifying overlapping friendship communities for understanding the dynamics of discrimination and well-being of ethnically diverse youth. (PsycINFO Da…
Young Women Face Disadvantage to Enrollment in University STEM Coursework Regardless of Prior Achievement and Attitudes
We evaluated STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) coursework selection by women and men (representative longitudinal sample, 10,370 Australians) in senior high school and university, controlling achievement and expectancy-value variables. A near-zero total effect of gender on high school STEM enrollment reflected pathways favoring boys through achievement and expectancy-value variables, but a counteracting direct effect of gen…
When Empathy Matters: The Role of Sex and Empathy in Close Friendships
Based on prior theory and research (Ciarrochi & Heaven, 2009; Eagly & Wood, 1999), we hypothesized that the link between empathy and friendship would be moderated by sex: Girls will nominate empathic boys as friends, whereas boys will not tend to nominate empathic girls. We collected measures of empathy, friendship social support, and close friendship nominations in grade 10 across 1,970 students in 16 schools ( M age = 15.70, SD = .44; males = 9…
