Trajectories of relationship quality and conflict in low‐income parents receiving home visitation services
Child Development Knowledge and Father Engagement
Early father engagement is associated with numerous positive child outcomes including cognitive development, emotional regulation, and fewer problem behaviors. Various fathering programs attempt to encourage father engagement through teaching fathers about young children's development and needs. This study examined 181 low-income fathers' child development knowledge (self-perceived and objective) as predictors of father engagement (verbal stimula…
Determinants of Paternal Engagement
Extant research highlights the importance of early paternal engagement for children and families. Thus, there is strong support for the exploration of predictors of low-income father engagement. Informed by Belsky's process model of parenting, this study explores contextual determinants of father-infant engagement (i.e., verbal engagement, physical play, and caregiving) including the unique contributions of the child, the father, and the broader …
Parenting Together
The number of children raised by never-married parents has increased in recent years. Although these children are at risk for the same types of negative outcomes after relationship dissolution as children of divorced parents, few resources exist for never-married parents who are facing coparenting challenges. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Parenting Together, a 9-hr (3 session) coparenting course designed exclusively for never-married …
Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome
Abusive head trauma, including shaken baby syndrome, is a serious form of abuse that often results in lifelong developmental challenges or infant death. Educational programs have helped reduce the number of infants hospitalized due to abusive head trauma. The current study provides a process evaluation of Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee's Shaken Baby Prevention Project. We utilized survey data from (a) 189 trained professionals who delivered the pr…
Longitudinal Program Evaluation of “Parenting Apart
A program evaluation was conducted of a parent education program for divorcing parents of minor children. Using a retrospective post-then-pre design, 139 participants reported their knowledge before and after the program and their behaviors in the month prior to the program. Two-month follow-up interviews were used to assess behavior change. Results indicated that participants reported both knowledge gain and behavior change. Change in triangulat…
Toward Disentangling Fathering and Mothering
This study employed dominance analysis to assess the relative importance of maternal and paternal support, behavioral control, and psychological control in explaining depression, antisocial behavior, and social initiative within 644 adolescents. We noted the lack of replicated findings concerning differential effects of mothers and fathers and employed an approach that considered mothers' and fathers' overlapping predictive abilities in determini…
Family and School Socialization and Adolescent Academic Achievement
This study investigates the socialization conditions of connection, regulation, and respect for psychological autonomy within the family and school contexts as predictors of adolescent academic achievement across 10 national/ethnic groups. We assess the extent to which these socialization dimensions in the family and school can be similarly measured within these samples. The correlations are evaluated for unique contributions, and the relative im…
A Multi-National Study of Interparental Conflict, Parenting, and Adolescent Functioning
This study assessed the associations between interparental conflict (IPC), parenting, and individual functioning among data gathered from school-going adolescents in Bangladesh, China, India, Bosnia, Germany, Palestine, Colombia, United States and three ethnic groups within South Africa. Specifically, we tested the validity of the spillover dynamic found in much research in the U.S., whereby marital conflict spills over into parenting and into th…
