Emotional Labour in a Cyberabad Shopping Mall
The article tries to understand the relationship between gender and changing forms of labour using Arlie Hochschild’s concept of emotional labour (1983). It focuses on the manufacturing of emotional and aesthetic labour, which are often formed and reinforced through the training of employees in Hyderabad’s high-tech city, also called HITEC city or Cyberabad. Though the site of the performance of the labour—the shopping mall, is usually seen as a …
Foregrounding Migration and Mobility in a Global Context
Mobilities at Work
Feminist ethnographers have been looking at the relationship between the migration of women and men and the impact on not just family and community but also their contribution to upward social mobility and the economic restructuring of the receiving and sending regions. Women were conceptualised as dependent migrants until feminist scholarship came of age and underlined that migrants are of all genders, religious groups, communities, castes and c…

Marginality and Gender in Educational Institutions in Contemporary India
Gender Sensitisation for School Teachers
This article focuses on the role that teachers play in the gender socialisation of children in schools and how a change in teachers through gender sensitisation training is imperative to bring about larger gender equality in society. Educational institutions are among the primary traditional agencies of socialisation. Teachers are important members of both the school and the community and play a major role in shaping the attitudes and ideologies …
Negotiating Honour by Jat and Muslim Women in Muzaffarnagar, Western Uttar Pradesh
In this article, we critically examine honour as a daily cultural code which is pivotal in organising gender relations, and go beyond culture-centric and Eurocentric conceptions of honour. By looking at everyday honour practices of Jat and Muslim women, in Muzaffarnagar, western Uttar Pradesh, we argue against the dominant understanding of honour as a product of religious mannerism and a culturally specific trait. Rather by looking at two religio…
Women and the Changing Nature of Work in Hyderabad’s Hitec City
This article will look at the ways in which gendered work is being transformed in contemporary India by focussing on Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. Since the mid-1990s, after India opened its doors to multinational agencies, new forms of gendered labour have manifested. One of the ramifications of this gendered process is the feminisation of labour that enabled the participation of more women in the work force, engaging in activities that w…
Nostalgia, nation and bollywood
A study of Bombay Cinema, or the so-called Bollywood, will no longer be complete without looking at the consumption of Bollywood movies because this cinema is now global in a specifically diasporic sense. This paper is an attempt to unveil the nature of engagement between Bollywood movies and second-generation Indian diaspora. This study is based on the coming of age of the second generation of the Indian-American diaspora and their engagement wi…
Reverse migrations and women’s role in shaping religious identities in Hyderabad
The paper is based on ethnographic observations of religious practices among Muslim return migrants from the Gulf, and among Hindu return migrants from the United States. The goal of these observations was to understand the ways that diasporic cultures have transformed these migrants’ religious practices after they return to India. We focus on the city of Hyderabad, in South India, with its long history of diverse Muslim communities, and recent h…
Feminist research
The article focuses on methodological debates between feminisms and sociologies. It suggests that before the advent of feminist studies, social scientists had not engaged critically with patriarchal and androcentric structures which oppress and dominate women. The article points out that in the feminist approach, theory and praxis are necessarily intertwined. It uses Sandra Harding's classification of feminist epistemologies as a framework within…

Teaching Gender in Indian Universities
As the fault lines in the Indian social and cultural terrain get deeper along dimensions of caste, class, and gender, conventional approaches of merely 'incorporation' of these 'variables' in mainstream curricula need to be interrogated. This paper examines the challenges of teaching courses on gender as part of a social science curriculum in Indian universities. Taking a reflexive approach, it provides an account of the author's experiences in t…
Understanding Gender Justice
The Indian Constitution is a woman-friendly document but institutionalised patriarchy in society at large has made it quite difficult to practice gender equality in courts. The women’s movements in India have been battling with the courts for more than three decades on issues related to various forms of violence against women in both public and private spheres. In this article, the focus is on understanding the perceptions of the lawyers who have…
Negotiating Identities
This work gives a gendered perspective on how communities conceptualize and indeed actualize the process of reconstruction in a foreign land. Faced with a disjunctive crisis, religion becomes a major symbolic resource in the rebuilding of a community. The community in question is South Asian, and the material representation of their coming together is the Sri Venkateswara temple in Pittsburgh. Clearly positioning herself in the field of women's s…
