From the Spherical Earth Model to the Globe
The shape of the Earth is a fundamental concept that students need to learn in astronomy education. This paper reports the findings of a study that confirms the effectiveness of an intervention involving the construction of a model of the Earth prior to the introduction of the globe as a codified artefact. The educational intervention had been preceded by the EARTH2 test, which was used to check how well students participating in the study master…
Geology, U-Pb dating and 3D visualisation of late-orogenic Klenov Pluton (Pelhřimov Core Complex, Central European Variscides)
The geological map of the Klenov Pluton (Moldanubian Batholith), and its 3D visualization, brings the new findings in the context of granite emplacement within late-Variscan settings. The Klenov Pluton has a peraluminous composition resulting from partial melting of metasedimentary sources and subsequent differentiation. The new ages 327.14 ± 0.21 Ma and 327.80 ± 0.37 Ma, reflect the narrow time-span of magma emplacement and cooling. The 327 Ma K…
Exploring the Phenomenon of the Additive Colour Process While Using a Computer Programme by 7–8-Year-Old Students
The research described in this article concerns the understanding of the additive colour process by children aged seven to eight years (N = 24) and the effectiveness of learning about this phenomenon while using a computer-based multimedia educational programme (MEP). First the children’s knowledge of the phenomenon was tested, then an intervention was organised for the experimental group during which they used the MEP, after which the children’s…
Children’s Astronomy. Development of the Shape of the Earth Concept in Polish Children between 5 and 10 Years of Age
The Earth’s shape concept develops as consecutive cognitive problems (e.g., the location of people and trees on the spherical Earth) are gradually resolved. Establishing the order of problem solving may be important for the organisation of teaching situations. This study attempted to determine the sequence of problems to be resolved based on tasks included in the EARTH2 test. The study covered a group of 444 children between 5 and 10 years of age…
Interdisciplinary geoscientific approach to radioactive waste repository site selection
Interpretation of the deep geological and tectonic setting is a key step for safety assessment of the potential sites for a deep geological repository of radioactive waste. However, the conventional geological mapping is difficult in the agricultural landscape with lacking rock outcrops. To address this task, we combined geological and hydrogeological mapping, morphostructural analysis and geophysical methods to construct a new geological map and…

Neanderthal Man and Homo sapiens in Central and Eastern Europe [and Comments and Reply]
This paper is a review of the fossil evidence bearing upon the problem of the origin and evolution of Homo sapiens and his relationship to Neanderthal Man, with special attention to the finds from Central and Eastern Europe, less well-known to the international community than those of Western Europe and elsewhere. Emphasis is placed on new discoveries supplementing the existing network of finds and on the reinterpretation of earlier finds through…
