  • Exploring differences in self-rated health among Blacks, Whites, Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans

    Maureen R Benjamins, Jocelyn Hirschman et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2012•Citada por: 9•Referências: 11

Together, these analyses suggest that the single item measure of SRH might not be appropriate for comparing health status across members of different race/ethnic groups. More research is needed to understand what factors influence how an individual perceives his or her health

  • Black–White Health Disparities in the United States and Chicago

Jennifer M Orsi, Jennifer Orsi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2010•Citada por: 21•Referências: 27

Objectives. In an effort to examine national and Chicago, Illinois, progress in meeting the Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating health disparities, we examined whether disparities between non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White persons widened, narrowed, or stayed the same between 1990 and 2005. Methods. We examined 15 health status indicators. We determined whether a disparity widened, narrowed, or remained unchanged between 1990 and 2005 …

  • Variations in the Health Conditions of 6 Chicago Community Areas

Ami M Shah, Steven Whitman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Citada por: 1•Referências: 24

Objectives. Although local-level chronic disease and risk factor data are not typically available, they are valuable for guiding public health interventions and policies. To present a case for disaggregated community-level health data, we conducted a study exploring the relevance of such data to research on health disparities. Methods. We designed a population-based health survey to gather information on many health measures, 13 of which are pres…

  • Smoking in 6 Diverse Chicago Communities—A Population Study

Jade L Dell, Steven Whitman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2005•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

Objectives. We analyzed smoking survey data across communities in Chicago, Ill, to explore community-level variations in smoking behavior. Methods. We conducted a health survey of 6 racially and ethnically diverse Chicago communities during 2002–2003. The survey included questions about current smoking, smoking history, and cessation attempts. Results. Smoking prevalence varied from 18% in the wealthiest (predominately White) community to 39% in …

Objectives. This study examined Chicago residents’ progress toward the Healthy People 2000 goal of reducing racial disparities in health and compared the results with a recent analysis of US data. Methods. Non-Hispanic Black–to–non-Hispanic White rate ratios were computed for 14 health status indicators for 1990 and for 1998. Results. Nationally and in Chicago, indicators for both Blacks and Whites improved between 1990 and 1998; however, Whites …

  • An intervention to increase breast and cervical cancer screening in low income African-American women

Steven Whitman, Loretta Lacey et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•1994

Although early screening and treatment are effective against breast and cervical cancer, screening remains far below the National Cancer Institute goals for the year 2000. Furthermore, the disenfranchised are often least screened. In response, an intervention was designed to increase the proportion of poor African-American women receiving Pap smears, breast examinations, and mammograms. The proportion of women who received Pap smears rose from 12…

  • Effects of Progressive Relaxation on Epilepsy

    Open Access•André Rousseau, Bruce P Hermann et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

It is well known that stress and other environmental factors often trigger seizures in people with epilepsy but reviews of the literature show no rigorous studies of behavioral approaches to minimize stress and improve seizure control. The purpose of this study was to overcome this deficiency by studying the effects of progressive relaxation therapy on the frequency of seizures in eight intellectually intact subjects with epilepsy. All 8 experien…

  • Validity of the Goldberg Rules for Classifying Psychopathology in Epilepsy

    Open Access•Bruce P Hermann, Steven Whitman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

The purpose of the present investigation was to inquire into the validity of Rule 1 (Normal vs Abnormal) of Goldberg's MMPI sequential diagnostic system for patients with epilepsy. One hundred and five patients with epilepsy were classified according to their psychiatric status by a rater blind to MMPI scores. Consistent with Goldberg's predictions as well as with past research on other populations, Rule 1 was completely successful in discriminat…
