American Greetings
We describe and interpret hand signaling on the highways of the United States as a form of symbolic interaction. Results of this observational case study suggest that hand signaling is most frequently encountered in some sparsely populated regions of North America and is characterized by behaviors similar to those observed in comparable situated activity systems
Calumet Ceremonialism as a Nativistic Response
While Hall's (1977) recent paper addressed the origins of calumet symbolism, it did little to explain (or even to acknowledge) the rapid expansion in the usage of the Hako-type calumet and its accompanying ceremony after the opening of the historic period. It is suggested here that this calumet emerged in the role of a stability-enhancing mechanism within precisely those societies that were experiencing rapid sociocultural change and fragmentatio…

This study contends that flooding and related stream-flow phenomena have had an extensive impact on archaeological resources. An analysis of 1972 flood damage on 226 aboriginal sites in a portion of the Susquehanna River drainage indicates a need for special concern about differential preservation, discovery techniques, and interpretation of archaeological data in stream valley areas.
