Creating the Coloured Other in South Africa in Light of the “Jewish Question” in Germany
This article offers a response to Warren Goldstein’s analysis of the racialisation of the “Jewish Question.” By analysing the role of Scripture, Afrikaner nationalism and racial science in the production of apartheid, we argue that the insights shared by Goldstein as related to the “Jewish Question” sparks a fertile reflection on the “Coloured Question” in South Africa. Language politics about the Afrikaans language are at the heart of struggles over transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. Opposing claims and practices over standard Afrikaans and Kaaps, a vernacular spoken mostly by coloured people, emerge in the tense language debate at Stellenbosch. Access to land and housing in South Africa is of great importance to a range of actors, leading to contested processes and complex organisational interactions. Using the anthropology of organisations and a process ethnographic approach, the spatial and organisational complexity in the Dwars River Valley is investigated. Formal and informal dispute resolution in the Limpopo Province, South Africa
The study of customary law benefits from a focus on both its formal rules and mechanisms and the informal aspect. The complexity of ‘living law’ is best captured by considering process and context.
