The Winding Road to Logical Empiricism: Philosophers of Science and the Youth Movement
Many representatives of Logical Empiricism were active in the youth movement before their scientific career. Rudolf Carnap, Hans Reichenbach, Kurt Grelling, Kurt Lewin, and Karl Korsch are the most prominent examples. The article compares the situation in Germany with that in Austria, where the relationship of Logical Empiricism to the Youth Movement is discussed using the example of Otto Neurath. But was there also programmatic coherence and ide…
Marie Reidemeister and Otto Neurath: Interwoven lives and work
Otto Neurath and Marie Reidemeister were both part of an interdisciplinary team which developed the ‘Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics’ (later known as Isotype). Neurath is usually credited as the ‘inventor’ of Isotype, yet Reidemeister was a key figure in this work of visual education from the beginning. After Neurath’s death in 1945, she continued the Isotype work for two and a half decades. Marie Reidemeister also became a historian of Iso…

Rudolf Modley and the Americanization of Isotype
Rudolf Modley was an associate at Otto Neurath’s Social and Economic Museum in interwar Vienna, where the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics was developed. It became Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) from the mid-1930s. Modley went to the United States as early as 1930 and founded Pictorial Statistics, Inc., in New York in 1934 and Pictograph Corporation in 1940. In the decades after 1945 Modley’s activity profile…
Bilder trennen und Bilder verbinden: Wege der Wiener Bildstatistik (1934-1945)
Populismus – Gleichheit – Differenz
Nations without nationalism: The Austro-Marxist Discourse on Multiculturalism
In addition to the socialist discourse on popular education, theoretical contributions of Austro-Marxist intellectuals such as Karl Renner, Otto Bauer and Otto Neurath on multiculturalism represent an important intellectual source of leftist culturalism. Considering actual debates, the Austro-Marxist approach on nation and culture moved between the politics of recognition and the politics of difference. Their concept combined both the recognition…
Die Politik des Kulturellen: Cultural Studies in Wien und in Birmingham
From the Cradle to the Grave: Austro-Marxism and Cultural Studies
The political theory and practice of Austro-Marxism provided an understanding of culture as an area of political conflict and as a class-based way of life. As a cultural and educational movement, Austro-Marxism defined the framework for transdisciplinary extramural cultural studies. An Austro-Marxist cluster defined by a number of scholars associated by political orientation and an alternative form of academic institutionalization emerged in inte…
