Delinquency, Identity, and Women's Involvement in Relationship Violence
This study focuses on factors associated with women's self‐reports of relationship violence “perpetration.” We analyzed data derived from personal interviews with 942 respondents who were originally contacted when they were adolescents and then 10 years later as young adults (N=721). Poverty, Income Inequality, and Violent Crime
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, several important reviews of the literature failed to establish a clear consensus on the relationship between economic conditions and violent crime. The research presented here applies the procedures of meta-analysis to 34 aggregate data studies reporting on violent crime, poverty, and income inequality. Delinquency as a Risk Factor in Teenage Pregnancy
Drawing upon longitudinal data collected from the same boys and girls in their early (13–14) and later (18–19) years of adolescence, this research models age at sexual debut, contraceptive risk-taking, and teenage pregnancy on the basis of family background and delinquency involvement during the early years of adolescence. The practice of revealing the past sexual conduct of rape victims in court trials was the issue which prompted this study. The primary objective was to model the effects ofjuror sex, victim stigma, and contributory fault on rape convictions using simulation data from 358 undergraduates. The first part of this study supports the contention that sex (gender) acts as a "diffuse status characteristics" in mixed-sex task groups and leads to the exertion of less influence by females than by males. The second part compares three techniques for changing expectations. Attitudes of Catholic and Protestant Clergy toward Euthanasia
The findings of this study do not categorically confirm the popular assumption that the clergymen are opposed to euthanasia because of the sanctity with which they regard human life. Although they find active euthanasia highly unacceptable, they view passive euthanasia more favorably. However, Catholic clergymen more than Protestant, are significantly opposed to both forms of euthanasia. From the response patterns, a Guttman Scale with a high coe…
Statistical Assumptions and Social Reality
The statistical assumptions of asymmetry and linearity in path models of academic achievement are critically examined using data from a sample of Connecticut high school seniors. Analysis suggests that student self-evaluations of academic capability and school performance may be reciprocally related and that academic achievement may be more resistant to change among poor than among average students. This paper replicates an earlier study of faculty status and tolerance of political dissent by Abramson and Wences. The data support the hypothesis that length of residence on a university campus is inversely related to faculty tolerance of student dissent. The expected relationship between academic rank and tolerance was eliminated by controlling for longevity, but the predicted relationship between academic field and tolerance was unaffected. T…
