This article examines the background in which enterprises called free schools, as well as complementary educational activities, have taken root in Chile. In 1986 (first published 1983) Clark's triangle of coordination compared national higher education systems according to the dimensions of state authority, market and academic oligarchy. The development of an oath for business managers, similar to the Hippocratic Oath, has inspired meditation upon similar oaths for academics and university managers. Such oaths are concerned with formulating and asserting the professionalism of the groups that might take them.
