  • Towards a history of parliamentary culture in the early modern world

Open Access•Paulina Kewes, Jim Van Der Meulen et al.•ARTICLE•Parliaments Estates and…•2024•Citada por: 1

This article proposes an innovative approach to early modern representative institutions, from the later fifteenth century to the early eighteenth. It argues that only a transnational, interdisciplinary, and comparative study of such bodies can reveal their shared culture and prominence in contemporary political discourse, public memory, and cultural production. Central to this new approach is the concept of ‘parliamentary culture’, which sees re…

  • Early modern parliamentary studies

    Open Access•Paulina Kewes, Steven Gunn et al.•ARTICLE•History Compass•2022•Referências: 11

In this essay, we call for a new approach to representative assemblies of early modern Europe and beyond. While there are vast national historiographies on their legal constitutional structure, little effort has been made to reconstruct the cultural and transnational dimension of such bodies, a phenomenon we describe as ‘parliamentary culture’. We argue that there is much to be gained from an investigation of the culture surrounding these bodies‐…

  • The 1553 succession crisis reconsidered

    Open Access•Paulina Kewes•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2017•Citada por: 2

This article offers a new perspective on the context and significance of the 1553 succession crisis precipitated by the Protestant Edward VI's abortive bid to exclude his Catholic sister Mary in favour of his evangelical cousin Jane. Challenging the view of Jane's coup as an evangelical crusade, and of Mary's victory as the only successful Tudor rebellion, it analyses the constitutional principles behind the new settlement of succession, demonstr…

  • I Ask Your Voices and Your Suffrages

    Open Access•Paulina Kewes•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 20

This essay provides a contextual reading ofTitus Andronicus, paying close attention to the play's collaborative authorship. Peele and Shakespeare are shown to have manufactured a superficially compelling but in reality utterly fake image of the Roman state as an imaginary laboratory for political ideas, especially the elective principle. Topical allusions and deliberate anachronisms encourage the audience to relate the subject matter to the prese…

  • A mere historian’

    Open Access•Paulina Kewes•ARTICLE•History•2015

Patrick Collinson experienced a ‘cultural’ or more specifically a ‘literary’ turn in mid‐career (the early 1980s) which had a profound effect on how he ‘did’ history. He rarely wrote about overtly ‘literary’ texts, but he helped to shape the area in which historians and literary scholars could have fruitful dialogue (sixteenth‐century histories and sermons, for example). This essay explores three aspects of this story. First, it examines when, wh…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Holinshed's Chronicles

Felicity Heal, Ian W Archer et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook Of Holinsheds…•2012

The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1577, 1587), issued under the name of Raphael Holinshed, was the crowning achievement of Tudor historiography, and became the principal source for the historical writings of Spenser, Daniel and, above all, Shakespeare. While scholars have long been drawn to Holinshed for its qualities as a source, they typically dismissed it as a baggy collection of materials, lacking coherent form and analytical …

bear your good fortune moderately, Mr. Poet: for . . . if I had written for your Party, your Pention wou’d have been cut off, as useless. Dryden, Vindication of the Duke of Guise (1683) Restoration theatre was political theatre. This Companion provides a fresh look at Dryden's tactics and triumphs in negotiating the extraordinary political and cultural revolutions of his time. The newly commissioned essays introduce readers to the full range of his work as a poet, as a writer of innovative plays and operas, as a purveyor of contemporary notions of…
