The Tcec Project and its Implications for Investigating Neolithisation of the Eastern Fertile Crescent
The ‘hilly flanks’ of the Zagros in the eastern Fertile Crescent (EFC) were the first area explicitly targeted for investigating the emergence of agriculture and sedentary life starting in the late 1940s. The subsequent concentration of research on the Levant and Anatolia suggested that early Neolithic innovations initially emerged in the western and central areas of the Fertile Crescent. However, renewed work in the central Zagros has once again…
The Formation of Early Neolithic Communities in the Central Zagros
Communal buildings have been reported from a number of early Neolithic sites from the Levant and Anatolia, but none were known from the central Zagros. Here we report on the recent excavations at Asiab, Kermanshah province, Iran, and argue that the principal feature found during Robert Braidwood’s excavation at the site in 1960 should be interpreted as an example of a communal building. We discuss the results of the previous and recent excavation…
Neolithization Process in the central Zagros
In the 1960–70s, fieldwork in the central Zagros Mountains produced evidence of early Holocene Neolithic settlements in this mountainous zone along the ‘Eastern wing’ of the Fertile Cre-scent. Following a long hiatus in fieldwork, new investigations have highlighted once more the po-tential of the transitional Neolithic (c. 9600–8000 BC) and early Neolithic (c. 8000–7000 BC) se-quence in this region. However, some of the pivotal sites that had or…
Feasting on Wild Boar in the Early Neolithic. Evidence from an 11,400-year-old Placed Deposit at Tappeh Asiab, Central Zagros
The contents of a pit located in the centre of a large communal structure at Asiab in the central Zagros mountains provides rare evidence for ritual food practices during the Early Neolithic (~9660–9300 cal.bc). This pit contained the skulls of at least 19 wild boars carefully placed inside and subsequently sealed. Antler from red deer and the skull of a brown bear were also concealed within the pit. The boars included both male and female animal…
New excavations at Tappeh Asiab, Kermanshah Province, Iran
The site of Tappeh Asiab in Iran is one of only a handful of Early Neolithic sites known from the Zagros Mountains. Discovered during Robert Braidwood's 'Iranian Prehistory' project, the site has seen limited publication of its early excavations. Here, the authors challenge some of the initial assumptions made about the site by discussing the first findings of renewed excavations, in the hope of substantially improving our currently limited knowl…
Firestones in the near Eastern Neolithic

A Sequence of Samarran Flint and Obsidian Tools from Choga Mami
Although our perception of what happened in Mesopotamian prehistory is very incomplete, our knowledge has been extended considerably by recent excavations and archaeological studies. Much of this research has been more or less specifically devoted to various aspects of the early development of villages and village economy. From this one fact seems to emerge: in the Hassuna Period at least two clearly different cultural traditions can be distingui…
