“They are moving more national, that is a big problem”
Despite a growing body of research concerned with the geographies of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the global economy, limited knowledge exists around their role in reshaping the third sector. Following decades of financialization, neoliberalism and austerity, England’s social housing sector presents an important opportunity to address this gap through a recent rise in M&A activity among housing associations, the country’s main form of socia…
Changing Lanes? Exploring Mergers and Acquisitions in the Global Auto Sector Through GPN 2.0
There has been an increase in the volume of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) throughout the global auto sector, but there is strikingly little empirical detail surrounding the nature, evolution and geographies of this activity. This article addresses this gap by analysing intra- and inter-sectoral M&A deals throughout the period of 2001-2020 to reveal the changing geographical and sectoral composition of the global auto sector. Adopting a GPN 2.0 …
Credit rating agencies’ views on China’s Belt and Road Initiative
How do credit rating agencies (CRAs) view China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)? Our analysis of 132 countries in 2000-17 demonstrates that Chinese foreign investment adversely affects sovereign ratings of recipient countries when these countries participate officially in the BRI but is otherwise insignificant. These results indicate that rather than being a generic China bias, the BRI bias is a geopolitical bias, based on CRA's expectation that…
Exploring the role of study abroad in decolonising geography curricula
Studying abroad has the potential to contribute to wider processes of curriculum decolonisation.More often than not, however, it can actually serve to recolonise and reproduce multiscalar forms of privilege, with the majority of programs seeing students either move between countries in the Global North or from the Global South to the North. In particular, our research has found that while students desire geographical distance from their study abro…
Financial centre primacy around the world
We analyse mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector between 2000 and 2017 to explore the domestic hierarchies of financial centres. Across a sample of 16 countries, we reveal different levels of financial centre primacy and explain how these levels change over time. These findings are analysed through a theoretical framework which integrates the literatures on urban primacy, global and world cities and comparative political economy. Situa…
Hungry for power
The global food system is in crisis. Climate change, ecological degradation, and economic and military conflict have exposed significant vulnerabilities in how the world produces, distributes, and consumes food. While governments aim to address these intersecting crises, they typically overlook another critical factor - the unprecedented concentration of corporate control in the global food system driven by contemporary processes of financializat…
The economic geographies of mergers and acquisitions (M&As)
Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are on the rise. Interlocking processes of globalization and financialization have increased their attractiveness and incentivized an upward spiral of M&A activity in recent years. This rise is profoundly spatial, as M&As reshape the geographies of production, consumption and finance, while aggravating uneven power-geometries through the concentration of corporate control. Despite this growth and inherent spatialit…
The Changing Landscape of International Financial Centers in the Twenty-First Century
We conduct an analysis of cross-border financial sector mergers and acquisitions (M&As) between 2000 and 2017 to explore the changing landscape of international financial centers (IFCs) and the spatial concentration of decision-making power in the Global Financial Network (GFN). Our analysis starts with time zones, showing a slow rise of IFCs in the Asia-Pacific, decline in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and resilience in the Americas. We t…
Tokyo's booms and busts
Tokyo is conspicuous for its now decades-long absence in the headlines of global financial news. In this article, we revisit the evolution of Tokyo as an international financial centre through the lens of Global Financial Networks (GFN). Drawing on insights from high-level interviews, we present a chronology of Japan's financial history between 1980 and 2020. This reveals a pattern wherein financial sector reforms and financial centre initiatives…
Financial discipline through inter-sectoral mergers and acquisitions
Financial discipline and financialization are transforming Global Production Networks through growing pressures related to shareholder value, short-termism and new financial products and services. However, little focus has been devoted to exploring whether these processes are accelerating rates of sectoral convergence. As financialization creates new challenges and opportunities for non-financial firms, are we seeing greater levels of convergence…
Financialization, securitization and the decline of pubs in Britain
Pubs in Britain are closing at a rapid rate. While changing regulatory, demographic and consumer trends have weakened the viability of pubs businesses in recent years, less is known about the role of Pub Companies, or ‘pubcos’, in contributing to the decline of the sector. Reflecting the core elements of financialization, pubcos acquire assets through securitization, prioritize shareholder value and operate under short-term financial targets and …
Transforming Health Experience and Action through Shifting the Narrative on Obesity in Primary Care Encounters
We sought to understand the impact of primary care conversations about obesity on people's everyday life health experience and practices. Using a dialogic narrative perspective, we examined key moments in three very different clinical encounters, the patients' journals, and follow-up interviews over several weeks. We trace how people living with obesity negotiate narrative alternatives that are offered during clinical dialogue to transform their …
The geographies of the institutional and industrial constraints on the financialization of German brewing
In recent decades, financialization has reworked the ownership, organization and geographies of global brewing. However, the institutional constellations of national, regional and local markets continue to shape and mediate its processes in variegated ways. Presenting a more granular and spatially sensitive conceptualization of financialization, this article adopts a cultural political economy (CPE) framework to analyse its relationships with the…
