Helping Medical Education Faculty Navigate a Post-Academic Landing Pad
Late-Career Faculty
PURPOSE: Individuals 55 or older constitute 28.5% of the U.S. population but 32% of full-time faculty at U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The academic medicine community knows little about the policies, programs, and resources for faculty in pre- and post-retirement stages. The authors sought to inventory the range of institutional resources for late-career faculty development and retirement pl…
Late-Career Expectations
PURPOSE: The average age of full-time faculty members at U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education was 49.5 in 2017, yet the academic medicine community knows little about late-career faculty. The authors sought to characterize full-time faculty members 55 or older and assess their work-life expectations. METHOD: The authors conducted a survey (May-September 2017) of faculty 55+ at 14 U.S. medical schools. RESU…

Distinct age and self-rated health crossover mortality effects for African Americans
Do Local Social Hierarchies Matter for Mental Health? A Study of Neighborhood Social Status and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults
These findings suggest that an older adult's relative position in a local social hierarchy is associated with his/her mental health, net of absolute position
Gene-Behavior Interaction of Depressive Symptoms and the Apolipoprotein E [Latin Small Letter Open E]4 Allele on Cognitive Decline
OBJECTIVE: Depressive symptoms and the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele are independent risk factors for cognitive decline. However, it is not clear whether the presence of both depressive symptoms and the APOE ε4 allele increases cognitive decline. METHODS: A prospective study of a population-based sample of 4150 (70% African American and 63% women) participants 65 years and older who were interviewed at 3-year intervals was conducted. Depressi…
Worship Attendance and the Disability Process in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
These results suggest that more frequent worship attendance does not contribute to slowing the progress of disability in late life. Future research is needed to better understand the development of the differences in disability associated with worship attendance observed at baseline
Neighborhood socioeconomic conditions are associated with psychosocial functioning in older black and white adults
Neighborhood Social Cohesion and Disorder in Relation to Walking in Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Objectives. To examine the role of neighborhood social conditions and walking in community-dwelling older adults. Methods. A multi-level analysis of data from 4,317 older adults (mean age = 74.5; 73% black) from a geographically-defined urban community. Participants completed structured interviews including 14 questions on neighborhood conditions and self-reported walking. The neighborhood questions were summarized into individual-level measures …
Neighborhood-Level Cohesion and Disorder
Findings provide initial evidence of the reliability and construct validity of these neighborhood-level social process measures
Black–white differences in health-related quality of life among older adults
Do Depressive Symptoms Predict Declines in Physical Performance in an Elderly, Biracial Population
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether depressive symptoms, assessed by the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), predicted change in physical function in elderly adults. METHODS: Participants were from a biracial, population-based sample of adults aged 65 and older (N: 4069; 61% black; 61% female). Physical function was assessed as a summary performance measure of tandem stand, measured walk, and repeated chair stand (…
Racial Disparities in Disability
Racial disparities in disability have not been eliminated, are greater among women, and have their origins earlier in adulthood
Black-White Differences in Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults Over Time
This study examines racial differences in depressive symptoms among older adults over time. The subjects were 4,275 community-dwelling persons aged 65 and older (62% Black) who participated in the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP) during a period of 9 years. Depression was measured using a summary score of the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). We modeled depressive symptoms using the method of General Estima…
A Profile of Calls to a Poison Information Center Regarding Older Adults
Older adults are the greatest consumers of over-the-counter drugs, take multiple medications for various medical conditions, and are experiencing biological changes that affect drug metabolism. Older women may be at especially high risk because of high drug use. Poison prevention education should target older adults
