We conducted a multilevel diary study in non‐profit sports clubs in Germany to examine the within‐person (day‐level) dynamics of volunteer engagement. The study was pre‐registered at OSF ( Link_to_Preregister ). Over a 3‐week period, we collected 649 usable daily reports from 105 participants ( M = 6.18 days per person). Multilevel analyses showed that self‐determined motivation was positively related to perceptual volunteer engagement (PVE). In …
The Impact of a Lifestyle Intervention on Cardiometabolic Risk Factors among Postpartum Hispanic Women with Overweight and Obesity in a Randomized Controlled Trial (Proyecto Mamá)
Factors Associated with Risk of Perinatal Depressive Symptoms Among Puerto Rican Women with Hyperglycemia
The place of the "Dark Triad" in general models of personality
The present research is aimed at clarifying meta-analytically the relation of so-called Dark Triad (DT; i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, or psychopathy) traits to factor analytic models covering the basic personality space. Unlike recent meta-analyses that investigated such relations at the bivariate level, we used 2-stage structural equation modeling (TSSEM) meta-analysis to explore the full complexity of structural relations between DT trait…
Family environment, children's acculturation and mothers' dietary intake and behaviors among Latinas

Effects of Latino children on their mothers' dietary intake and dietary behaviors
Impact of an Exercise Intervention on Physical Activity During Pregnancy
Objectives. We examined the impact of a prenatal exercise intervention on physical activity in 260 women at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus. Methods. We randomized participants in the Behaviors Affecting Baby and You (BABY) Study, which took place from 2007 to 2012, to either a 12-week individually tailored, motivationally matched exercise intervention (n = 132) or to a comparison health and wellness intervention (n = 128). We assessed phy…

Smoking cessation in college-aged women
Tobacco use continues to be the leading, preventable cause of mortality among US adults. Research frequently cites weight maintenance and body image as influential in women's reasons for smoking. Objective: This present study sought information for informing effective smoking cessation interventions through the examination of young women's views on smoking.Participants: Forty-three 18–21-year-old women were recruited from November 2006 to April 20…
Physical activity as an aid to smoking cessation during pregnancy
It is feasible to recruit pregnant smokers to a trial of physical activity for smoking cessation and this is likely to be popular. A large randomised controlled trial is needed to examine the efficacy of this intervention
Compensating for Low Topic Interest and Long Surveys
Certain survey characteristics proven to affect response rates, such as a survey's length and topic, are often under limited control of the researcher. Therefore, survey researchers sometimes seek to compensate for such undesired effects on response rates by employing countermeasures such as material or nonmaterial incentives. The scarce evidence on those factors' effects in web survey contexts is far from being conclusive. This study is aimed at…
Personality in cyberspace
This research examined the personality of owners of personal Web sites based on self-reports, visitors' ratings, and the content of the Web sites. The authors compared a large sample of Web site owners with population-wide samples on the Big Five dimensions of personality. Controlling for demographic differences, the average Web site owner reported being slightly less extraverted and more open to experience. Compared with various other samples, W…
Who Are the People Reluctant to Participate in Research? Personality Correlates of Four Different Types of Nonresponse as Inferred from Self‐ and Observer Ratings
This article outlines a typology of nonresponse biases that may occur in research based on voluntary participation and presents empirical evidence on the relationships between nonresponse and personality traits. We describe four different types of nonresponse occurring at the recruitment stage, during data collection, and at the stage of recruitment for further research. Personality correlates of all types of nonresponse were investigated using d…
Self-Control in the General Theory of Crime
Numerous studies have attempted to test Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime. The present article outlines the view that virtually every empirical test of the theory is based on serious misinterpretations of its core construct, self-control. A reinterpretation of self-control is proposed and seven requirements for its construct-valid measurement are specified. A review of self-control measures used in previous research shows that the…
An Empirical Examination of the Construct Validity of Two Alternative Self-Control Measures
The present study contrasts a newly developed measure of self-control as outlined in the General Theory of Crime, the Retrospective Behavioral Self-Control scale (RBS), with the most widespread measure of this construct. The RBS is based exclusively on an assessment of prior behavior with possible long-term negative consequences for the actor, whereas the latter scale is an example of attitudinal measures based on a listing of specific personalit…
