How, for Whom, and Under What Conditions
Causal pathways approaches are gaining traction as evaluators seek methods that move beyond descriptive analysis to rigorously explain how, for whom, and under what conditions change occurs in complex systems. Yet there remains limited practical guidance on how to operationalize these approaches in real-world philanthropic contexts or assess their quality. This article addresses these gaps through a case study of an evaluation taking a causal pat…
Restrictive and permissive alcohol policies during the Covid-19 pandemic and their association with alcohol consumption in the United States
Alcohol policies and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic were linked to both lower and higher alcohol consumption in different population subgroups. Restrictive and permissive policies had diverging associations with consumption patterns across subgroups. While effect sizes were modest, they could translate into meaningful changes in alcohol consumption at the population level, especially during prolonged times of crisis
The association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol outcomes
Alcoholic beverage types consumed by population subgroups in the United States
The PHEM-B toolbox of methods for incorporating the influences on Behaviour into Public Health Economic Models
This is the first attempt to rigorously and coherently propose methods to incorporate the influences on behaviour into health economic models of public health interventions. It may not always be feasible or necessary to model the influences on behaviour explicitly, but it is essential to develop an understanding of the key influences. Changing behaviour and maintaining that behaviour change could have different influences; thus, there could be be…
An analysis of intersectional disparities in alcohol consumption in the US
Alcohol is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States (US). Prior research has demonstrated that alcohol consumption and related mortality are socially patterned; however, no study has investigated intersectional disparities in alcohol consumption, i.e., attending to how social positions overlap and interact. In this study, we used an innovative intersectional approach (Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and…
