  • Impact of micro- and macronutrient status on the incidence of tuberculosis

Open Access•Alvaro Schwalb, Malin Bergström et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies are associated with tuberculosis (TB) incidence. However, evidence is limited on the impact of micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) supplementation among underweight individuals. We conducted a secondary data analysis of a randomised controlled trial of lipid nutritional supplements with and without high-dose vitamin and mineral supplementation (LNS-VM vs LNS) for underweight (Body Mass Index [BMI] 2 …

  • Challenges and opportunities for infection prevention and control in hospitals in conflict-affected settings

Open Access•Hattie Lowe, Susannah Woodd et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2021

Hospitals included in this study demonstrated how they overcame certain challenges in the face of limited resources and funding. These strategies present opportunities for learning and knowledge exchange across contexts, particularly in the face of the current global coronavirus pandemic. The findings are increasingly relevant today as they provide evidence of the fragility of IPC programmes in these settings. More research is required on tailori…

  • Understanding infection prevention behaviour in maternity wards

    Open Access•Mícheál De Barra, Giorgia Gon et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Referências: 31

Observations and interviews suggest improvements in the ergonomic design of delivery rooms, including convenient availability of sinks, soap, hand gel, hand towels and gloves, may be a low-cost way to reduce the infection burden from poor hand hygiene

  • Behavioural Determinants of Hand Washing and Glove Recontamination before Aseptic Procedures at Birth

Open Access•Giorgia Gon, Sandra Virgo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Recent research calls for distinguishing whether the failure to comply with World Health Organisation hand hygiene guidelines is driven by omitting to rub/wash hands, or subsequently recontamination of clean hands or gloves prior to a procedure. This study examined the determinants of these two behaviours. Across the 10 highest-volume labour wards in Zanzibar, we observed 103 birth attendants across 779 hand hygiene opportunities before aseptic p…

  • Unpacking the enabling factors for hand, cord and birth-surface hygiene in Zanzibar maternity units

    Open Access•Giorgia Gon, Said M Ali et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 21

Recent national surveys in The United Republic of Tanzania have revealed poor standards of hygiene at birth in facilities. As more women opt for institutional delivery, improving basic hygiene becomes an essential part of preventative strategies for reducing puerperal and newborn sepsis. Our collaborative research in Zanzibar provides an in-depth picture of the state of hygiene on maternity wards to inform action. Hygiene was assessed in 2014 acr…

  • What are the threats from antimicrobial resistance for maternity units in low- and middle- income countries

Open Access•Warren Graham, Emma Morrison et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2016

    No abstract available

  • Appetite testing in HIV-infected African adults recovering from malnutrition and given antiretroviral therapy

Open Access•Andrea M Rehman, Susannah Woodd et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2015

Objective The Nutritional Support for Africans Starting Antiretroviral Therapy (NUSTART) trial was designed to determine whether nutritional support for malnourished HIV-infected adults starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) can improve early survival. Appetite is related to health outcomes in this population, but the optimal appetite metric for field use is uncertain. We evaluated two measures of appetite with the goal of improving understanding …
