    Open Access•Jessica Wilson, Evangelia Demou et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•Referências: 44

The COVID-19 pandemic had detrimental and unequal repercussions on mental health. To date there is little evidence exploring how motherhood and workplace size moderates this relationship for working women. This study aimed to estimate changes in working women's mental health at the start of each UK lockdown and estimate the effect of motherhood and workplace size on mental health. We used Understanding Society data from women in paid employment, …

  • The effect of school summer holidays on inequalities in children and young people’s mental health and cognitive ability in the UK using data from the millennium cohort study

Open Access•Theocharis Kromydas, Mhairi Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

We found inequalities in mental health and cognitive ability according to maternal education, and some evidence or worsening mental health and mental health inequalities across school summer holidays. METHODS: We used representative Understanding Society data from 6474 adults (41 207 observations) in paid employment who participated in pre-pandemic (2017-2020) and at least one COVID-19 survey.…

  • Which is most important for mental health

    Open Access•Theocharis Kromydas, Rodney M Thomson et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2021

Moving into unemployment was most strongly associated with CMD, with poverty also important but income effects generally much smaller. Men appear most sensitive to employment transitions, but poverty may have larger impacts on women and those with least education. As the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, minimising unemployment as well as poverty is crucial for population mental health

  • Educational Attainment and Gender Differences in Work–Life Balance for Couples across Europe

    Open Access•Theocharis Kromydas•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 17

The current article aims to explain the interrelationships between the educational attainment of individuals living in house-holds with heterosexual partners, their work-life balance (WLB) and the macro-economic climate of the country they live in, using data from the European Social Survey. WLB is a complex concept, as it is not only determined by factors related to someone's employment or domestic work and childcare responsibilities, but also b…

  • Rethinking higher education and its relationship with social inequalities

    Open Access•Theocharis Kromydas•ARTICLE•Palgrave Communications•2017

The purposes and impact of higher education on the economy and the broader society have been transformed through time in various ways. Higher education institutional and policy dynamics differ across time, but also between countries and political regimes and therefore context cannot be neglected. This article reviews the purpose of higher education and its institutional characteristics juxtaposing two, allegedly rival, conceptual frameworks; the …
