Urban-rural disparity
This study highlights the significant impact of population aging and urbanization on dementia prevalence in Taiwan over two decades. Dementia prevalence increased markedly across both urban and rural areas, with rural areas surpassing urban prevalence between 2010 and 2015, likely due to decentralized healthcare and long-term care policies. These findings underscore the need for tailored dementia care strategies, especially in rural settings, to …
Appraisal of universal health insurance and maternal health services utilization
Introduction: The Indonesian government introduced universal health insurance through the National Social Security System (JKN) in 2014 to enhance overall healthcare. This study compares maternal health care (MHC) service utilization before and after JKN implementation in Indonesia. Method: Using 2012 and 2017 data from Indonesia Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), we conducted a two-period cross-sectional design study following the Anderson mo…
Socioeconomic inequalities in uptake of outreach mammography before and after accessibility improvement of Taiwan’s national universal breast cancer screening policy
Our study observed that utilization of outreach screening through MMUs increased after CAQIP. The MMUs made outreach screening services more accessible in Taiwan. Expanding outreach screening services and educational programs to promote mammography uptake in local communities could help reduce the potential effect of socioeconomic disparities, and thus may enhance early detection of breast cancer. Further study could focus on the accessibility of…
Abortion and Female Cancer Risks among Women Aged 20 to 45 Years
Abortion was related to lower uterine and ovarian cancer risk but was not associated with risks of incident breast cancer or cervical cancer. Longer follow-up may be necessary to observe risks of female cancers at older ages
Breast Cancer Incidence among Female Workers by Different Occupations and Industries
Greater percentages of industrial occupations (i.e., manufacturing, wholesale and retail, or health professionals) were associated with slightly increased breast cancer risk. Further studies should investigate the possible risk factors among female workers in those industries with slightly higher incidence of breast cancer
Compulsory citizenship behavior and employees' contextual performance
We explored whether compulsory citizenship behavior (CCB) influenced employees' contextual performance via their perception of psychological safety, and examined whether political skill moderated this path. Participants were dyads formed by 139 supervisors and 534 subordinates from businesses in Taiwan. The results reveal that CCB was negatively associated with contextual performance through the mediator of perceived psychological safety. However…
Predictors and Assessment of Hospice Use for End-Stage Renal Disease Patients in Taiwan
Given the "Patient Right to Autonomy Act" implemented in Taiwan in 2019 to promote the concept of a "good quality of death", this patient assessment scale may help health professionals target ESRD patients for hospice care and engage in shared decision making and the advance care planning process
Effect of accessibility improvement in a national population-based breast cancer screening policy on mammography utilization among women with comorbid conditions in Taiwan
Effect of a national population-based breast cancer screening policy on participation in mammography and stage at breast cancer diagnosis in Taiwan
Effectiveness of Pay-for-Performance Incentive Designs on Diabetes Care
BACKGROUND: Taiwan's National Health Insurance program implemented a pay-for-performance (P4P) program based on process measures in 2001. In late 2006, the P4P was revised to also include achievement of outcome measures. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether a change in P4P incentive design structure affected diabetes outcomes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHOD: We used a longitudinal cohort study design using 2 population-based databases. Newly enrol…
Trend and Factors Associated With Healthcare Use and Costs in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
BACKGROUND: Little is known about how a universal National Health Insurance program with cost-containment strategies affect costs and quality of diabetes care. OBJECTIVES: To examine the trends of healthcare use and costs for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Taiwan over the last decade, and to identify factors associated with high healthcare cost and poor diabetes care. RESEARCH DESIGN: We delineated the pattern of healthcare use …
Cost-Effectiveness of Diabetes Pay-for-Performance Incentive Designs
BACKGROUND: Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) Program implemented a diabetes pay-for-performance program (P4P) based on process-of-care measures in 2001. In late 2006, that P4P program was revised to also include achievement of intermediate health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study examined to what extent these 2 P4P incentive designs have been cost-effective and what the difference in effect may have been. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHOD: Analyz…
Did Budget Cuts in Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital Payment Affect Hospital Quality of Care
BACKGROUND: Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments are one of the major sources of financial support for hospitals providing care to low-income patients. However, Medicaid DSH payments will be redirected from hospitals to subsidize individual health insurance purchase through US national health reform. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to examine the association between Medicaid DSH payment reductions and nursing-sensitive…
Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital Payment
This study examines the association between hospital uncompensated care and reductions in Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments resulting from the 1997 Balanced Budget Act. We used data on California hospitals from 1996 to 2003 and employed two-stage least squares with a first-differencing model to control for potential feedback effects. Our findings suggest that nonprofit hospitals did reduce provision of uncompensated care in …
