  • A Review of Aphasia Couples Therapy

Larry Boles•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2011

Aphasia couples therapy (Boles, 2009) has a brief and all too obscure history. A variety of terms have been applied to this form of therapy. This paper reviews evidence for the efficacy of the approach that recruits the significant others of people with aphasia to assume the role of therapist, with the speech-language therapist assuming the role of “coach.”

  • Speech, Language, and Hearing Risk for Samoan Children K to 3

Gretchen C Hess, Gretchen Hess et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2010

In 2006, at the request of the American Samoan (AS) government, the third author and colleagues screened 206 AS children in grades K to 3 for speech, language, and hearing. Results included a high (65%) speech/language/cognitive “non-pass” rate, a similarly high hearing non-pass rate, and an alarming 76% incidence of impacted cerumen. In the second portion of this study, the screening was administered in English to Sacramento Samoan (SS) children…

  • Working with couples

Larry Boles, Mimi Lewis•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2003

This paper describes solution focused aphasia therapy (SFAT), using a case study of an individual who benefited from four weeks of SFAT, four years post-stroke. The method uses conversation as the medium, couples as the participants, and authentic, relevant dependent measures derived by the couple for measuring improvement. Two SFAT strategies discussed are exception-finding (exceptions to problem situations) and scaled questions. The case study …

  • A preliminary investigation of phonetic diversity in adults with motor speech disorder

Michael P Robb, Larry Boles et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2002

A preliminary investigation of the phonetic diversity characterizing the speech of non-impaired and speech-impaired adults was performed. Two measures of phonetic diversity, the ratio of consonants-to-vowels (C:V) and the phonetic product (PP), were applied to the spontaneous speech productions of a group of non-impaired adult females and adult females with a motor speech disorder. The C:V ratio evaluates the ratio of supraglottal-to-glottal arti…

  • Aphasia therapy in a bilingual speaker

Larry Boles•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2000

This report documents the progress of a 38-year-old man with aphasia (1.5 years post-stroke), BB, following eight weeks of outpatient ‘Conducting Conversation’ (CC) aphasia therapy. The CC approach used the patient's wife, MB, to provide the therapy, with the speech-language pathologist as the ‘conductor’, encouraging both members of the dyad to respond in a manner conducive to effective communication. Interaction during therapy sessions occurred…

  • Solution-focused co-therapy for a couple with aphasia

Larry Boles, Mimi Lewis•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2000

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) and a social worker co-treated a couple using Solution Focused Therapy (SFT). The female member of the couple had aphasia, and sought therapy with her husband because they were having difficulty in their relationship. A single session of SFT is analysed. Finding exceptions to ‘problem behaviour’, emphasizing the positive, solution-focused reinforcement, and the changing roles of the SLP and social worker are hi…

  • Evaluations of Hawaii Creole English and Standard English

Open Access•Mary Lynn Fiore Ohama, Carolyn C Gotay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2000•Citada por: 4•Referências: 28

The growing number of multicultural dialect and creole speakers entering the public school system underlines the importance of understanding perceptions pertaining to language standards and differences. Previous research has shown a consistent evaluative difference between nonstandard and standard linguistic forms. In this study, 197 university students were randomly assigned to rate an audio tape delivered in Hawaii Creole English or Standard En…

  • Conversation analysis as a dependent measure in communication therapy with four individuals with aphasia

Larry Boles•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•1997

This report documents the progress of four individuals with aphasia through a seven-week course of Conversation Partners Therapy using a conversation analysis (CA). The CA as used in this study reveals changes otherwise unavailable from more traditional testing methods. Four individuals with aphasia participated. Their treatment comprised a seven-week regimen of therapy which used a family member as a trained facilitator, with the speech-language…
