This study reports on the longitudinal examination of a structured arts program for Canadian youth, aged 9 to 15 years, from low-income communities. Evaluated were the extent to which community-based organizations successfully recruited and retained youth in the program and whether they demonstrated improvement with respect to artistic ability (combination of theatre, visual, and media arts) and psychosocial indicators. The results suggest succes…

  • The epidemiology of major depressive episodes

Open Access•Laura Andrade, Laura Helena Andrade et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Methods…•2003

Absence of a common diagnostic interview has hampered cross‐national syntheses of epidemiological evidence on major depressive episodes (MDE). Community epidemiological surveys using the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview administered face‐to‐face were carried out in 10 countries in North America (Canada and the US), Latin America (Brazil, Chile, and Mexico), Europe (Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, an…

  • How Do Risk Factors Work Together? Mediators, Moderators, and Independent, Overlapping, and Proxy Risk Factors

Helena C Kraemer, Eric Stice et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Psychiatry•2001

OBJECTIVE: The authors developed a methodological basis for investigating how risk factors work together. Better methods are needed for understanding the etiology of disorders, such as psychiatric syndromes, that presumably are the result of complex causal chains. METHOD: Approaches from psychology, epidemiology, clinical trials, and basic sciences were synthesized. RESULTS: The authors define conceptually and operationally five different clinica…

  • Age at First Alcohol Use

David J DeWit, Edward M Adlaf et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Psychiatry•2000

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the natural course of DSM-III-R alcohol disorders as a function of age at first alcohol use and to investigate the influence of early use as a risk factor for progression to the development of alcohol disorders, exclusive of the effect of confounding influences. METHOD: Data were obtained from a community sample (N=5,856) of lifetime drinkers participating in the 1990-1991 Mental Health Supplement of the On…

  • Childhood stress and symptoms of drug dependence in adolescence and early adulthood

David J DeWit, Kathryn MacDonald et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1999

Retrospective data from 7,871 individuals age 16 to 64 were used to investigate whether, among those diagnosed with lifetime social phobia, its symptoms serve to link life events and chronic strains in childhood with symptoms of drug dependence in adulthood. Findings suggest social phobia as a pathway through which early life events and chronic strains affect the development of drug-related problems. Implications for research and clinical practic…

  • Physical Health Complaints and the Use of Outpatient Mental Health Services Among Those with a Mental Disorder

  • Factors predicting use of mental health and social services by children 6-16 years old

Lindsay John, Lindsay H John et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1995

Correlates of mental health and social service utilization are examined based on Ontario Child Health Study data. Findings indicate that psychiatric disorder as a predictor of service use may be confounded by school performance and parental use of services, thus calling into question the extent to which program planning should be based on prevalence rates of child psychiatric disorder. Children from low-income families tend to make greater use of…

  • Immigrant children

    Heather Munroe-Blum, Michael H Boyle et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1989•Referências: 16

Data from the Ontario Child Health Study were used to examine the strength of association between child immigrant status and child psychiatric disorder, poor school performance, and use of mental health/social services. Bivariate results indicate that immigrant children are not at increased risk for psychiatric disorder or poor school performance and that they use mental health and social services significantly less often than do their nonimmigra…

  • Ontario Child Health Study

    Open Access•John A Byles, JOHN BYLES et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•1988

The reliability and validity of the 12‐item General Functioning (GF) subscale of the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD) is reported here. Psychometric properties of the FAD have been previously determined, but no independent assessment has been made of the GF subscale, which was used to measure family functioning in the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS). Reliability was measured by Chronbach's alpha and split‐half correlation. Validity was a…

  • Ontario Child Health Study

    David R Offord•ARTICLE•Archives of General Psychiatry•1987

We studied the six-month prevalence of four child psychiatric disorders (conduct disorder, hyperactivity, emotional disorder, and somatization) and patterns of service utilization for mental health and social services, ambulatory medical care and special education by different regions of Ontario, urban-rural residence, and age and sex groupings. Among children 4 to 16 years of age, the overall six-month prevalence rate of one or more of these dis…

  • School Performance, IQ and Female Delinquency

    Open Access•David R Offord, 美佐子 崎 et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•1981

The present study explores the extent to which early school failure may be related causally to female delinquency. Parental interview and school record data were collected on 59 girls (and their families) placed on probation. The results suggest that in a relatively poor urban environment school failure does not play an important etiologic role in female delinquency but rather both the school failure and the delinquency arise from common or co-ex…

  • Broken homes, parental psychiatric illness, and female delinquency

David R Offord, Nola Abrams et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1979•Referências: 13

Fifty-nine families with delinquent daughters were compared with 59 families, matched on socioeconomic class, with daughters of the same age who were not delinquent. The frequency of broken homes was found to be the strongest distinguishing factor between probands and controls. Parental disabilities appeared to play a part in the incidence of delinquency among girls, particularly when the disabilities result in a broken home

  • School Performance, Iq and Delinquency

David R Offord, MARY F POUSHINSKY et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1978•Citada por: 3

  • Three Developmental Pathways to Delinquency in Girls

Marianne E Felice, MARIANNE FELICE et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•1972•Citada por: 2

This paper presents familial-social data from both records and interviews on three groups of delinquent girls. The results suggest that the anti-social behaviour of these girls in the three groups may have different developmental roots. The possible nature of the etiological factors involved and the resulting treatment implications are discussed
