Prevalence of Potentially Traumatic Events, Other Life Events and Subsequent Reactions Indicative for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in the Netherlands
The 12-month and lifetime prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in different country populations has been assessed while using clinical interviews. Because this methodology is relatively time-consuming and resource-intensive, disaster health researchers adopted instruments, like the Trauma Screening Questionnaire (TSQ). This study (1) used the TSQ to estimate the lifetime prevalence of potentially traumatic events and other life even…
Predictors of Persistent Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms
Objective: To explore the persistency of Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) and its prognostic factors in the general adult population. Knowledge of prognostic factors of MUS may indicate possible avenues for intervention development. Methods: Data were derived from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2 (NEMESIS-2), a nationally representative face-to-face cohort study among the Dutch general population aged 18-64 years. We…
Correlates of Common Mental Disorders Among Dutch Women Who Have Had an Abortion
Correlates of postabortion mental disorders were variables that have been identified as general risk factors for mental disorders, which supports the idea that abortion does not pose specific risks to future mental health. Future research should investigate in what way unstable relationships, adverse life events and psychiatric history affect postabortion mental health
What Factors are Associated with Flourishing? Results from a Large Representative National Sample
Flourishing is the ultimate end-state in psychology and a key-concept in the field of positive psychology research. Flourishers are those individuals with both high levels of hedonic well-being and eudaimonic well-being. Although many researchers have focused on one or another of these domains, only a few have investigated the comprehensive state of flourishing. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of flourishing and its associ…
Gender differences in mental disorders and suicidality in Europe
The role of leisure and delinquency in frequent cannabis use and dependence trajectories among young adults
Negative socioeconomic changes and mental disorders
BACKGROUND: There is increasing interest on whether the current global economic uncertainties have an influence on the population's mental health. In this paper, we examined the association of negative socioeconomic changes, job loss and household income reductions with incident mental disorders. The moderating effect of gender was assessed. METHODS: Data come from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2 (NEMESIS-2), a represen…
Low functional status as a predictor of incidence of emotional disorders in the general population
Persistence and desistance in heavy cannabis use
Many cannabis users ‘mature out’ of their drug use, and factors of cannabis use cessation have been identified. However, very little in-depth knowledge is available about the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. Criminological studies have gained interesting insights in desistance from crime, yet these perspectives are rarely used in drug research. This qualitative, three-year longitudinal study explored the processes involved in desistance fro…
Are there gender differences in service use for mental disorders across countries in the European Union? Results from the EU-World Mental Health survey
BACKGROUND: Women are more likely than men to use mental healthcare (MHC) due to differences in the types of problems and help-seeking behaviours. The consistency of this relationship across European countries, whose MHC organisation differs substantially, is unknown. METHODS: Lifetime MHC-use and the type of MHC provider were assessed in 37 289 participants from the EU-World Mental Health (EU-WMH) survey, including 10 European countries (Norther…
The Prevalence and Correlates of Binge Eating Disorder in the World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys
The Role of Study and Work in Cannabis Use and Dependence Trajectories among Young Adult Frequent Cannabis Users
Life course theory considers events in study and work as potential turning points in deviance, including illicit drug use. This qualitative study explores the role of occupational life in cannabis use and dependence in young adults. Two and three years after the initial structured interview, 47 at baseline frequent cannabis users were interviewed in-depth about the dynamics underlying changes in their cannabis use and dependence. Overall, cannabi…
The Role of Parents, Peers and Partners in Cannabis Use and Dependence Trajectories among Young Adult Frequent Users
In a 3-year qualitative longitudinal study the role of social relationships in cannabis use and dependence in young adults (all frequent users at baseline) was explored. Overall, cannabis use and dependence declined. Changes in use were, for a considerable part, attributable to processes and life events in social relationships with peers and partners, while parents had little influence. Negatively experienced events often triggered increased use …
Cross-national epidemiology of DSM-IV major depressive episode
BACKGROUND: Major depression is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, yet epidemiologic data are not available for many countries, particularly low- to middle-income countries. In this paper, we present data on the prevalence, impairment and demographic correlates of depression from 18 high and low- to middle-income countries in the World Mental Health Survey Initiative. METHODS: Major depressive episodes (MDE) as defined by the Diag…
Cannabis Dependence and Peer Selection in Social Networks of Frequent Users
In a Dutch longitudinal study on the dynamics of cannabis dependence, at baseline 600 frequent cannabis users (? 3 days cannabis use per week in past 12 months) aged 18–30 years were interviewed. Nearly half of all participants (42%) met DSM-IV criteria for cannabis dependence in the 12 months prior to the interview. Participants were recruited by respondent-driven sampling; referrals were understood as proxy for social networks to explore peer a…
Chronic Physical Conditions and Their Association With First Onset of Suicidal Behavior in the World Mental Health Surveys
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of a range of temporally prior physical conditions with the subsequent first onset of suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts in large, general population, cross-national sample. The associations between physical conditions and suicidal behavior remain unclear due to sparse data and varied methodology. METHODS: Predictive associations between 13 temporally prior physical conditions and first onset of suici…
Screening for mood and anxiety disorders with the five-item, the three-item, and the two-item Mental Health Inventory
Cross-National Analysis of the Associations among Mental Disorders and Suicidal Behavior
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. Mental disorders are among the strongest predictors of suicide; however, little is known about which disorders are uniquely predictive of suicidal behavior, the extent to which disorders predict suicide attempts beyond their association with suicidal thoughts, and whether these associations are similar across developed and developing countries. This study was designed to test each of thes…

Smoking estimates from around the world
The World Mental Health Surveys estimates complement existing global tobacco monitoring efforts. The observed global diversity of associations with smoking and smoking cessation underscore reasons for implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control provisions and prompt local adaptation of prevention and control interventions
Comparison of Population Health Status in Six European Countries
BACKGROUND: The EQ-5D questionnaire is an instrument for describing and valuing health states. OBJECTIVES: To compare general population health status measured by the EQ-5D in 6 European countries. METHODS: In the European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders representative population samples in Belgium (n = 2411), France (n = 2892), Germany (n = 3552), Italy (n = 4709), the Netherlands (n = 2367), and Spain (n = 5473) completed the EQ-5…
Common Chronic Pain Conditions in Developed and Developing Countries
Cross-national prevalence and risk factors for suicidal ideation, plans and attempts
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide; however, the prevalence and risk factors for the immediate precursors to suicide - suicidal ideation, plans and attempts - are not wellknown, especially in low- and middle-income countries. AIMS: To report on the prevalence and risk factors for suicidal behaviours across 17 countries. METHOD: A total of 84 850 adults were interviewed regarding suicidal behaviours and socio-demographic and…

Male prostitutes and safe sex
Twenty-seven male prostitutes were interviewed extensively about their work and considerations relating to safe sex with clients. Important differences were found between street prostitutes and those working at home. Street-workers were more likely to be using hard drugs, to have a heterosexual preference, to have no other occupation, to have more clients, but less steady ones, and to have a more negative working attitude. Sexual techniques most …
Alcohol and drug use in heterosexual and homosexual prostitution, and its relation to protection behaviour
To assess the prevalence and effects of alcohol and drug use in heterosexual and homosexual commercial contacts, and the relationship between their use and unsafe sexual behaviour, 127 female prostitutes, 27 male prostitutes, 91 clients of female prostitutes and 24 clients of male prostitutes were interviewed face-to-face with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire. The respondents were living or working in different parts of The Netherlands…
Professional HIV risk taking, levels of victimization, and well-being in female prostitutes in The Netherlands
Segmentation of heterosexual prostitution into various forms
The results of an earlier Dutch study on prostitutes' clients, interviewed face-to-face, were cross-validated by means of telephone interviews, which both guaranteed anonymity and produced a larger sample of respondents (n = 559). Depending on their preference and financial resources, they had visited different types of prostitution; but about half of them had restricted themselves to one type. Inconsistent use of condoms was reported by 14% of t…
Occupational risk of HIV infection among Western health care professionals posted in Aids endemic areas
In this study on occupational risks of HIV infection among 99 Dutch medics working in AIDS endemic areas, 61% reported percutaneous exposures during an average stay of 21 months. The mean number of injuries was lower among physicians (2.0 versus 3.9 per year) and higher among nurses (1.9 versus 1.2) than in previous research conducted in 1987-1990 among Dutch medics returning from Africa. But the reduction of exposures among physicians might be e…
Underlying reasons for sexual conduct and condom use among expatriates posted in Aids endemic areas
Among people who work abroad, sexual activity and therefore the risk of HIV infection appear to be relatively high. Little is known about the factors that influence sexual conduct when staying abroad, separated from their usual social environment. This is why 55 expatriates who had been sexually active in AIDS endemic areas were selected for an in-depth interview from the original sample of 864 Dutch expatriates participating in a study on sexual…
Same-Sex Sexual Behavior and Psychiatric Disorders
BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that homosexuality is associated with psychiatric morbidity. This study examined differences between heterosexually and homosexually active subjects in 12-month and lifetime prevalence of DSM-III-R mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders in a representative sample of the Dutch population (N = 7076; aged 18-64 years). METHODS: Data were collected in face-to-face interviews, using the Composite International Dia…
Determinants of Mental Distress in Adults With a Severe Auditory Impairment
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the determinants of mental health among severe hearing-impaired adults in the Netherlands, separately by prelingual and postlingual age of onset. METHODS: Five hundred twenty-three face-to-face interviews were carried out by persons with practical skills in communication with hearing-impaired people. RESULTS: Of prelingually and postlingually deaf men, 27.1% and 27.7%, respectively, reported mental distress (scores on th…
The epidemiology of major depressive episodes
Absence of a common diagnostic interview has hampered cross‐national syntheses of epidemiological evidence on major depressive episodes (MDE). Community epidemiological surveys using the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview administered face‐to‐face were carried out in 10 countries in North America (Canada and the US), Latin America (Brazil, Chile, and Mexico), Europe (Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, an…

Anxiety Disorders and Risk for Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts
CONTEXT: Controversy exists whether anxiety disorders are independently associated (ie, after adjusting for comorbid mental disorders) with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether anxiety disorders are risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in a large population-based longitudinal study. METHODS: Data come from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study, a prospective population-based s…
