School-Level Bribery in Public Primary Education in Uganda
Despite stern anticorruption laws, and the government’s pronounced ambition to offer education free of charge, there is evidence to suggest that many families in Uganda with children in public primary schools get solicitated for bribes. The present study examines why ordinary Ugandan parents and schoolteachers recurrently become involved in the lose-lose game of bribery. Drawing primarily on household survey data, this case study takes a deep div…
Impact of the micro-research model on building research capacity in undergraduate health professions students in HIV-related research
BACKGROUND: Low-income settings such as Uganda bear a disproportionately high burden of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, but contribute little to knowledge production to address their health challenges. The training of health professionals traditionally focuses on clinical skills with less emphasis on research; yet, in practice, health professionals are expected to do operational research. In this study, we evaluate the impact of a micro-research model…
HIV prevalence, risk factors, prevention methods, and interventions among taxi drivers and commercial motorcyclists in sub-Saharan Africa
Transport workers, particularly taxi drivers and commercial motorcyclists, comprise a population at high risk for HIV and account for nearly one-third of new HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Transport workers bridge HIV infections from high-risk populations to the general population. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence around HIV prevalence, risk factors, prevention methods, and interventions among taxi drivers and …
Prevalence and factors associated with unsafe abortion among married women admitted to the gynecology ward at Lira regional referral hospital in Lira City Northern Uganda
There was a high prevalence of unsafe abortion in this study. Older age, coming from rural settings, and low monthly income were significantly associated with unsafe abortion practices. The Ministry of Health should launch a national campaign to educate the public about the risks of unsafe abortion and the availability of sexual and reproductive health services, such as family planning services, to prevent unsafe abortion from unplanned pregnanci…
Scoping review of qualitative studies on family planning in Uganda
Family planning (FP) is an essential component of public health programs and significantly impacts maternal and child health outcomes. In Uganda, there is a need for a comprehensive review of the existing literature on FP to inform future research and programmatic efforts. This scoping review aims to identify factors shaping the use of FP in Uganda. We conducted a systematic search of eight scholarly databases, for qualitative studies on FP in Ug…
Factors influencing the use of multiple HIV prevention services among transport workers in a city in southwestern Uganda
The use of multiple HIV prevention services has been found to decrease the risk of acquiring HIV when tailored to individuals at risk of HIV exposure, including transport workers. Therefore, we assessed the uptake of multiple HIV prevention services (≥2) and associated factors among transport workers in a city in Southwestern Uganda. This cross-sectional study comprised motorcycle taxi riders, motor vehicle and truck drivers, aged 18 to 55 years …
Beliefs, perceptions and health-seeking behaviours in relation to cervical cancer
BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Uganda. Despite earlier information campaigns to introduce human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination, which also targeted cervical cancer, misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the subject remain high. Women in Uganda present with cervical cancer at an advanced stage due to poor health-seeking behaviours, with an associated high mortality rate. This project explor…
Integration of HIV and cervical cancer screening perceptions of healthcare providers and policy makers in Uganda
Integration of HIV and CC screening can offer manifold benefits to all stakeholders in the health system, more so to the women. However, its feasibility in developing countries such as Uganda will most likely be hampered by weak and inefficient health systems. Therefore, when considering HIV and CC screening integration, it is important not to only recognize the benefits but also take into account resources requirements for addressing the existin…
Consumer Perspectives on a Pericoital Contraceptive Pill in India and Uganda
CONTEXT: Studies suggest that women in some countries have adopted emergency contraceptive pills as a routine method of family planning. This practice indicates there may be latent demand for a pericoital contraceptive pill taken only when a woman has sexual intercourse, and labeled and marketed for use as a regular contraceptive method. METHODS: To understand the appeal and potential market for a pericoital contraceptive pill, 39 focus groups an…
Using Formative Research to Design a Behavior Change Strategy to Increase the Use of Improved Cookstoves in Peri-Urban Kampala, Uganda
Household air pollution from cooking with biomass fuels negatively impacts maternal and child health and the environment, and contributes to the global burden of disease. In Uganda, nearly 20,000 young children die of household air pollution-related pneumonia every year. Qualitative research was used to identify behavioral determinants related to the acquisition and use of improved cookstoves in peri-urban Uganda. Results were used to design a be…
