Association Between Atopic Dermatitis in Pregnant Women and Preterm Births
High Incidence of Atopic Dermatitis among Children Whose Fathers Work in Primary Industry
The hygiene hypothesis assumes a low incidence of allergic diseases in families engaging in farming work. However, a few studies have indicated rural life as a potential risk factor for atopic dermatitis (AD). Using a large Japanese birth cohort dataset, we calculated the accumulated incidence of AD in children aged 6 months and 1, 2, and 3 years by family business and the hazard ratio. We adjusted for confounding factors. The father's job was co…
Exposure to House Dust Mite Allergen and Endotoxin in Early Life and Sensitization and Allergic Rhinitis
The association between endotoxin and allergic rhinitis (AR) is not conclusive. The aim of this study was to determine the association between endotoxin and house dust mite (HDM) allergens in dust, and HDM sensitization and AR among Japanese infants. This study included 4188 participants in the Sub-Cohort Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Dust was collected from children's mattresses at age 18 months and endotoxin and HDM aller…
Association between maternal fermented food consumption and child sleep duration at the age of 3 years
The consumption of fermented foods during pregnancy is associated with reduced risk of sleep deprivation in 3-year-old children, albeit in a limited way
Association between a single mother family and childhood undervaccination, and mediating effect of household income
This nationwide, prospective, large-scale birth cohort study found that a household with a single mother was associated with an increased risk of childhood undervaccination, and 10% of this association was explained by household income. These findings underscore the importance of improving the social environment among single mother families, including not only poverty but also working conditions
Social isolation among mothers caring for Infants in Japan
Findings showed the impact of urban living on maternal health and the influence of isolation on mothers' anxiety about child-rearing and their potential for child maltreatment. The importance of fathers' involvement in child-rearing in preventing maternal child-rearing isolation was highlighted
Encouraging Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration and Innovation in Epidemiology in Japan
Background: Scientific innovation is often achieved through the intersection of ideas from different fields. However, barriers prevent non-epidemiologists from cultivating interests in epidemiology or undertaking epidemiologic work. In this study, we evaluated changes in the diversity of research topics in an epidemiologic journal over time. We aimed to understand how epidemiologists and non-epidemiologists communicate about epidemiologic data an…
Association between Maternal Exposure to Chemicals during Pregnancy and the Risk of Foetal Death
Scarce knowledge is available on the relationship between maternal chemical exposure during pregnancy and foetal deaths. We studied the association of spontaneous abortions and stillbirths with occupational or daily maternal exposure to chemicals commonly used by pregnant women. Data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), a nationwide prospective birth cohort study, were used. The participants of the study were asked about the fr…
Influence of Maternal Active and Secondhand Smoking during Pregnancy on Childhood Obesity at 3 Years of Age
Maternal smoking during pregnancy is a risk factor for childhood obesity; however, the combined effect of secondhand smoking during pregnancy on children in the early years is unclear. Koshu GRoup Activity, Active Play and Exercise (GRAPE) Study
School-based programmes need to be effective, easy for all, easy to perform within a short duration, and inexpensive. However, no studies have reported whether voluntarily and very short-time active play programmes contribute to improved health outcomes. This study aims to describe the GRoup activity, Active Play and Exercise (GRAPE) cluster randomised controlled trial that examined whether active play interventions of very short durations contri…
Individual and Regional Characteristics Associated with Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy in Japan
Smoking during pregnancy causes various maternal and fetal health problems. Although there are considerable differences in maternal smoking proportions between localities, only a few studies have investigated the effects of regional characteristics on maternal smoking behavior. This study aimed to clarify the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and individual and regional characteristics. We used data from a large nationwide bir…
Association between Maternal Smoking during Pregnancy and Missing Teeth in Adolescents
Tooth agenesis and disturbance of tooth eruption is the most prevalent oral defect, and is possibly caused by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. We hypothesized that prenatal factors may affect tooth development. The objective of this study was to examine whether smoking during pregnancy was associated with missing teeth in the offspring during adolescence. The study population comprised pregnant women and their children regist…
“Telling” and assent
INTRODUCTION: One of the ethical issues surrounding birth cohort studies is how to obtain informed assent from children as they grow up. What and how parents tell their children affects children's future choices about the study, yet few studies have focused on parents' influence on children. OBJECTIVE: This study examines parents' attitudes towards telling their children about their participation in a specific birth cohort study. METHODS: We cond…

BACKGROUND: There are no studies about the caregiving burdens in families of patients with eating disorders in Japan, and only limited studies on the role of caregivers' stress coping, social support, and mental health. This study examines caregiving burdens, mental health conditions, and associated factors in caregivers of anorexia nervosa (AN) patients in Japan. METHODS: Seventy-nine principal caregivers (70 mothers, 5 fathers, 3 spouses and 1 …
Health literacy, socioeconomic status and self-rated health in Japan
Health literacy (HL) is a key determinant of health in a contemporary society characterized by abundant information. Previous studies have suggested that basic or functional HL is positively associated with health, whereas evidences on the association between health and communicative/critical HL are scarce. Furthermore, confounding by socioeconomic status on HL-health association has been poorly tested. Using cross-sectional data from a nationall…
Do body mass index trajectories affect the risk of type 2 diabetes? A case–control study
The present study suggested that the pace of increasing BMIs is similar between Japanese diabetic patients and healthy individuals. The increasing BMI was not detected to independently affect the onset of type 2 diabetes
Rationale and study design of the Japan environment and children’s study (Jecs)
Through JECS, chemical substances to which children are exposed during the fetal stage or early childhood will be identified. The JECS results will be translated to better risk assessment and management to provide healthy environment for next generations

A total of 4,000 people were selected from the Japanese general population by a stratified two-phase sampling method, and 2,171 people participated by post; this survey asked about the pros and cons of crop-related genomic studies promotion, examined people…
Income inequality and health
BACKGROUND: Income inequality has been associated with worse health outcomes in several but not all studies. The heterogeneity across studies may be explained by the variations in the size of area or population over which income inequality was evaluated. Moreover, the studies above a certain inequality threshold, conducted more recently, and incorporating a time lag may have stronger associations between income inequality and health. The authors …
SP1-12 Relationship between sleep duration at 3 years of age and growth during childhood
Introduction Short sleep duration in early life has been thought to be a risk factor for subsequent overweight. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration at 3 years of age and childhood weight status through a multi-level analysis. Methods The study population comprised children born between 1 April 1991, and 31 March 2003, in Koshu City, Japan, and who participated in a medical check-up at 3 years of age. Short and long…
P1-265 Effectiveness of smoking prevention programs for maternal and child health
Introduction Smoking is a very important risk factor for health including that of pregnant women. It can cause low birth weight babies and various maternal and child health problems. Though the number of municipalities which provide smoking prevention programs has been increasing, not all of them do so. This study aims to clarify the effectiveness of smoking prevention programs for maternal and child health. Methods We collected two data sets in …
