  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • Comparison of Summer and Winter Objectively Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Older Adults

Open Access•Nanna Ýr Arnardóttir, Nina Dora Oskarsdottir et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

In Iceland, there is a large variation in daylight between summer and winter. The aim of the study was to identify how this large variation influences physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB). Free living PA was measured by a waist-worn accelerometer for one week during waking hours in 138 community-dwelling older adults (61.1% women, 80.3 ± 4.9 years) during summer and winter months. In general, SB occupied about 75% of the registered …

  • Fish and fish-liver oil consumption in adolescence and midlife and risk of CHD in older women

Open Access•Alfheidur Haraldsdottir, Johanna E Torfadottir et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2016

Objective To study the association of fish and fish-liver oil consumption across the lifespan with CHD later in life among Icelandic women, with special emphasis on the effects of consumption in adolescence. Design Prevalence association study. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95 % confidence intervals of CHD according to fish or fish-liver oil exposure. Models were adjusted for age, education, concurrent diet and other kn…

  • Hearing Loss and Cognitive Decline in Older Adults

Frank R Lin, Kristine Yaffe et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Internal Medicine•2013

BACKGROUND Whether hearing loss is independently associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults is unknown. METHODS We studied 1984 older adults (mean age, 77.4 years) enrolled in the Health ABC Study, a prospective observational study begun in 1997-1998. Our baseline cohort consisted of participants without prevalent cognitive impairment (Modified Mini-Mental State Examination [3MS] score, ≥80) who underwent audiometric testing in…

  • GWAS of 126,559 Individuals Identifies Genetic Variants Associated with Educational Attainment

    Open Access•Cornelius A Rietveld, Sarah E Medland et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2013

Genetic College Many genomic elements in humans are associated with behavior, including educational attainment. In a genome-wide association study including more than 100,000 samples, Rietveld et al. (p. 1467 , published online 30 May; see the Perspective by Flint and Munafò ) looked for genes related to educational attainment in Caucasians. Small genetic effects at three loci appeared to impact educational attainment.

  • Socioeconomic factors from midlife predict mobility limitation and depressed mood three decades later; Findings from the Ages-Reykjavik Study

    Open Access•Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study Investigators Age, D A I…•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Socioeconomic factors from midlife and from childhood affect mobility limitation and depressed mood in old age. Prevention of health problems in old age should begin as early as midlife

  • Similar decline in mortality rate of older persons with and without type 2 diabetes between 1993 and 2004 the Icelandic population-based Reykjavik and Ages-Reykjavik cohort studies

Open Access•Elin Soffia Olafsdottir, Elin Olafsdottir et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

A decline in cardiovascular and all-cause mortality rates was observed in older persons during the period 1993-2004, in both those with and without type 2 diabetes. This decline may be partly explained by improvements in cardiovascular risk factors and medical treatment over the period studied. However, type 2 diabetes still persists as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality

  • Racial Differences in Self-Rated Health at Similar Levels of Physical Functioning

    Sarah Spencer, S M Spencer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2009•Citada por: 12•Referências: 4

The results suggest greater health pessimism among Black elders and expand previous work by including objective functioning in multidimensional models to deconstruct race variations in the SRH of older adults

  • Racial Disparities in Health Care Access and Cardiovascular Disease Indicators in Black and White Older Adults in the Health ABC Study

Open Access•Ronica N Rooks, Ronica Rooks et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2008•Citada por: 2•Referências: 6

Research on health care quality may contribute to our understanding of these disparities

  • Overweight, Obesity, and Mortality in a Large Prospective Cohort of Persons 50 to 71 Years Old

Kenneth Adams, Kenneth F Adams et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2006

BACKGROUND: Obesity, defined by a body-mass index (BMI) (the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters) of 30.0 or more, is associated with an increased risk of death, but the relation between overweight (a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9) and the risk of death has been questioned. METHODS: We prospectively examined BMI in relation to the risk of death from any cause in 527,265 U.S. men and women in the National Institutes of Health-A…

  • Sex- and race-related differences in cross-sectional geometry and bone density of the femoral mid-shaft in older adults

Open Access•Dennis R Taaffe, Thomas Lang et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2003

These results indicate that bone geometry and density of the femoral diaphysis differs primarily by sex, rather than race, in older well-functioning adults. In addition, site-specific muscle area appears to have a potential contributory role to bone geometry parameters, especially in women

  • Body mass index and mortality in nonsmoking older adults

Paula Diehr, Diane E Bild et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1998•Citada por: 8•Referências: 20

OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the relationship of body mass index to 5-year mortality in a cohort of 4317 nonsmoking men and women aged 65 to 100 years. METHODS: Logistic regression analyses were conducted to predict mortality as a function of baseline body mass index, adjusting for demographic, clinical, and laboratory covariates. RESULTS: There was an inverse relationship between body mass index and mortality; death rates were higher for thos…

  • Implications of Health Status in Analysis of Risk in Older Persons

    Open Access•Tamara B Harris, Jacob J Feldman•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1991•Citada por: 4•Referências: 1

This article explores the hypothesis that health status in old age acts as a summary measure of health exposures over time and, as such, plays a central role as a determinant of survival and morbidity trajectories in old age. Evidence is presented for the utility of health status as a modifier of risk in other areas of gerontologic research, and an example of modification pertinent to the cholesterol-heart disease controversy in old age is presen…
