  • Bridging immunization gaps

Open Access•Moses Mwale, Penelope Masumbu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Zambia’s 2024 Measles-Rubella Supplementary Immunization Activity (SIA), conducted from 23 to 28 September across all 116 districts, targeted children aged 9–59 months to address immunization gaps exacerbated by COVID-19 disruptions and responding to ongoing measles outbreaks. This community case study evaluates the effectiveness of microplanning, the feasibility of real-time digital monitoring, and the equity of reaching zero-dose children durin…

  • Profiling zero-dose measles-rubella children in Zambia

Open Access•Moses Mwale, Guissimon Phiri et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Measles & Rubella (MR) zero-dose children (unvaccinated for measles–rubella) cluster in underserved communities can sustain measles transmission. We estimated MR zero-dose prevalence after Zambia’s 2024 MR Supplementary Immunisation Activity (SIA) and identified associated risk factors and barriers. A coverage survey (two-stage stratified cluster design) across all 10 provinces, was conducted from 27 th December 2024–16 th January 2025, involved …

  • Antimicrobial stewardship situation analysis in selected hospitals in Zambia

Open Access•Joseph Yamweka Chizimu, Steward Mudenda et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs are critical in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In Zambia, there is little information regarding the capacity of hospitals to establish and implement AMS programs. The objective of this study was to conduct a baseline assessment of WHO core elements for an AMS program implementation in eight hospitals in Zambia. Materials and methods: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study …

  • Community perceptions, acceptability, and the durability of house screening interventions against exposure to malaria vectors in Nyimba district, Zambia

Open Access•Kochelani Saili, C de Jager et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study demonstrated that in rural south-east Zambia, closing eaves and screening windows and doors was widely accepted. Participants perceived that house screening reduced human-vector contact, reduced the malaria burden and nuisance biting from other potentially disease carrying insects. However, screened doors are prone to damage, mainly by children, domestic animals, rust, and termites

  • The economic impacts of house screening against malaria transmission

    Open Access•Brian Chisanga, Erwin Bulte et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 19

Malaria imposes an economic burden for human populations in many African countries, and this burden may be reduced through house screening initiatives. We use a randomized controlled trial to measure the economic impacts of house screening against malaria infection. We use a sample of 800 households from 89 villages in rural and peri-urban Zambia to collect baseline data in August 2019 and endline data in August 2020. The main outcome variables a…
