Alcohol-Related Intimate Partner Harm in Australia: Demographic Patterns and Changes Between 2008 and 2021
Living with the consequences of an intimate partner's drinking
Heavy drinking is a key factor linked to intimate partner violence (IPV) and related harms. The study aims to examine how intimate partners of heavy drinkers, predominantly women, understand and navigate these experiences and to categorise the associated harmful behaviours and impacts. Using semi-structured interview data collected in 2023 as part of the Alcohol’s Harm to Others (AHTO) qualitative study, we analysed interviews with a sub-sample o…
Dynamic shifts in crystal methamphetamine and heroin price and purity in metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria, Australia, 2009-2020
Overall declines in both crystal methamphetamine and heroin purity-adjusted prices in Victoria suggests that, by 2019, people who purchased these drugs received more drug for a given purchase than in previous years. These changes closely match trends seen in some key harms such as opioid overdose
Australian parents’ attitudes, perceptions and supply of alcohol to adolescents: A national cross-sectional survey
Parental supply of alcohol to adolescents is associated with increased risk of subsequent adolescent alcohol use and harms, so identifying factors associated with parents’ decision-making is critical. This study examined how parental supply is associated with attitudes toward adolescent alcohol use, perceived norms of parental supply, perceived behavioural control and perceived acceptable age to drink alcohol. A total of 1197 Australian parents w…
Parent and child co‐resident status among an Australian community‐based sample of methamphetamine smokers
A prospective cohort of people who use methamphetamine in Melbourne and non‐metropolitan Victoria, Australia: Baseline characteristics and correlates of methamphetamine dependence
The pitfalls of prevalence estimation: The case of regular and dependent methamphetamine use in Australia
Objectives: The prevalence of regular and dependent methamphetamine use in Australia in 2013/14 was recently estimated indirectly using multipliers at 268,000 regular (defined as >monthly use in the past 6 months) and 160,000 dependent (defined as >3 on the Severity of Dependence Scale) methamphetamine consumers, respectively. We replicated this approach using more contemporary multipliers and alternate data sources to explore identified limitati…
I aspire to look and feel healthy like the posts convey”: Engagement with fitness inspiration on social media and perceptions of its influence on health and wellbeing
Many participants reported benefits of fitspiration content including increased social support and access to health information. However, participants also reported that fitspiration content could negatively influence their wellbeing and perception of healthy goals. Content posted by relatable individuals or qualified experts was perceived as most trustworthy. Future research is needed to determine the individual and content-related factors assoc…
Modelling a disease-relevant contact network of people who inject drugs
SimAmph: An agent-based simulation model for exploring the use of psychostimulants and related harm amongst young Australians
Are drug detection dogs and mass-media campaigns likely to be effective policy responses to psychostimulant use and related harm? Results from an agent-based simulation model
P2-511 The relationship between alcohol use and injecting drug use: Impacts on health and social functioning
Introduction Alcohol is a major risk factor for heroin overdose, but the effects of alcohol consumption on other health and social outcomes for people who inject drugs have not been systematically evaluated. In this paper we explore the effects of alcohol on health and social outcomes for people who inject drugs. Methods Data were obtained from 655 people who inject drugs as part of the Melbourne Injecting Drug User cohort study (MIX). AUDIT-C sc…
The Ethics of Paying Drug Users Who Participate in Research: A Review and Practical Recommendations
The payment of research participants raises ethical and empirical questions that have special importance in addictions research involving drug-dependent participants. Despite a now large literature on human subjects payment, what is still needed is practical guidance for investigators and ethics committees. This paper reviews the literature on: Current payment practices and guidelines; defining features of undue and due incentives and fair reimbu…
