Integrating blue-green water conservation and greywater reuse for sustainable water management in mountain ecosystems
Restoring South Asian Forests
Understanding the influence of environmental factors on forest composition along the vertical gradient of Northwestern Himalaya
Temperate and alpine ecosystems are considered the most sensitive and vulnerable region towards climate change in the Indian Himalayan region. The current study investigates forest composition in relation to environmental and edaphic factors, which is critical for determining plant community patterns. The impact of climatic and soil properties was studied to better understand species diversity and composition over an elevational gradient (2500–48…
A methodological perspective on inclusive assessment of household carbon footprint
Potential environmental implications of sandbar afforestation
Perceptions of change in the environment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic
Role of traditional ecological knowledge on field margin vegetation in sustainable development
Field Margin Vegetation (FMV) is an important part of agrobiodiversity which provides a range of ecological and economic benefits. Those services are mostly unaccounted in spite of having potential contribution to biodiversity conservation, well-being of farming households, climate change mitigation etc. The structure and composition of FMV and socioeconomic transformation are closely linked to each other. Transformation which influences FMV nega…
An assessment of socio-economic vulnerability at the household level
India in Twenty First Century
Although India has succeeded in creation of 868 Protected Areas (PA) covering its 5.02 percent of the total geographical area; it comes with a social cost. With high population pressure and livelihood based on nature and natural resources, India is yet to find a pragmatic win-win solution for solving the problem of Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) in the twenty-first century. In the present paper, the authors discuss the nature of HWCs occurring in …
Drivers and consequences of biophysical landscape change in a peri-urban–rural interface of Guwahati, Assam
Breathing Fresh
It has been widely reported that as a consequence of nation-wide lockdown in India to control COVID-19 pandemic, the air pollution levels have significantly reduced The near-complete shutdown of economic activities and stay-at-home instructions have tremendously helped in reducing emissions This paper has attempted to look into the pattern of change in Air Quality Index in five megacities (Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata) of India f…

Fuel switching from wood to LPG can benefit the environment
The Role of Cultural Values in Agrobiodiversity Conservation
The role of socio-cultural values in biodiversity conservation is an integral part of the people living in Uttarakhand, Central Himalaya, India. Still, there exist many rules and regulations set up by earlier generations for the conservation and management of the resources. To a certain extent the present generation is going through the same philosophy following the ideas set up by their ancestors for conservation and management of the resources …
Adverse impacts of pasture abandonment in Himalayan protected areas
Transhumant Pastoralism in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, India
In the past, transhumant pastoralists in the Indian Himalaya used resources available in various subsystems for their livelihoods. Recent sedentarization of a section of the transhumant pastoralist population resulted in competition with the existing sedentary population for resources in some areas. Resources such as grazing areas and forests are becoming less productive and can no longer cover growing demand (both human and livestock). In the Ni…
Ethnomedicinal Plant Uses in a Small Tribal Community in a Part of Central Himalaya, India
The Raji tribe a smallest group among the native societies of Central Himalaya, inhabiting in Kumaon region bordering to Nepal, has strong faith and belief in traditional health care system, viz. herbal treatment. The living condition of Rajis is extremely poor and neither they have better access to modern health care and nor they have information pertaining to the same. The 50 plant species are documented here pertaining to the uses in tradition…
Patterns and Implications of Land Use/Cover Change
Land use/cover changes during the period 1963–1993 and their ecological and socioeconomic implications in Pranmati Watershed in the Indian Himalaya were analyzed on the basis of information extracted from archival records, satellite data, participatory discussions, and field measurement. Agricultural land use was practiced on 14.2% of the watershed area in 1963 compared with 18.5% in 1993. More than 50% of the agricultural expansion occurred in c…
Conservation policy–people conflicts
Promoting ecotourism in the buffer zone areas of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve
The fascination for mountains, breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, socioeconomic traditions, history and lifestyles attract mountaineers, trekkers, naturalists ascetics, explorers and cultural tourists from all over the world to the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR) and adjoining areas. Expedition/mountaineering and tourism, as a livelihood option for the people living in the buffer zone areas of NDBR, was important, next to a…
Management Conflicts in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, India
Biosphere reserve models around the world are becoming increasingly people-oriented and conservation-conscious in achieving their objectives. However, reserves established in developing countries, such as the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in India, are facing management versus people conflicts due to the insensitivity of management to both genuine and irrational demands coming from people who are motivated by potential economic benefits. The prese…
