The pathways to net-zero
Industrial decarbonization strategies include transitioning to cleaner energy sources, optimizing production processes, and recovering waste heat in energy-intensive sectors. Manufacturing industries with high energy demands are experiencing structural transformation to facilitate net-zero transitions. Despite these developments, there is limited research on how individual firms implement decarbonization strategies within distinct regulatory and …
Ethnicity as an Opportunity
This research examines the challenges of gaining access to participant observation in two foreign factories pseudonymously named Blue Apparel Company (BAC) and Green Garment Company (GGC) located in Bole Lemi Industrial Park (BLIP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Accessing foreign manufacturing firms that have employed thousands of local workforces is difficult because they do not want observers to know their “mysteries of the abode of production”. Est…
Despotism on the shop floor
In recent years, Ethiopia has become a prime destination for labour-intensive, export-oriented manufacturing industries by virtue of its favourable investment climate and cheap labour. This article examines the labour governance and disciplinary strategies of foreign companies in Ethiopia's industrial park, focusing on the Blue Apparel Company (BAC) in the Bole Lemi Industrial Park, Addis Ababa. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted from Au…
Unjust Manufacturing
Ethiopia, emulating the developmental state model of East Asian states, attracted labor-intensive manufacturing industries to create job opportunities for its young people by providing a class of “cheapened laborers” for global production. Many young rural girls and university graduates work for foreign companies that have relocated their factories to Ethiopian industrial parks. Drawing on fieldwork in two foreign garment companies in the Bole Le…

Towards Decent Employment or a Destitute Livelihood? The Dynamics of the Agrarian Question of Labor in Ethiopia
This paper examines the demand for industrial labor among dispossessed peasants and how the non-absorption of peasants’ labor into industrial production intertwined in and around the Bole Lemi industrial park (BLIP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The scores of peasants who were dispossessed to enable the establishment of BLIP were promised to get compensatory jobs. The park's expansion ensures capital accumulation for the companies but produces a ‘pil…
Interrogating Dispossession for Development in Ethiopia
In this article, I explore some of the implications of state land policy as an approach to analyzing the double dispossession – land and labor dispossessions. Despite a growing interest in the study of land dispossession in the global South, especially after the post-2008 financial crisis, examining the complexities between the land policy, land and labor dispossessions have relatively been overlooked. I discuss how the state’s land policy contri…
