  • Breaking Time and Place

Linnda R Caporael, Bo Xie et al.•CHAPTER•Machines That Become Us•2017

For most of human history, people’s relationships have been bound by time and space. Communication and coordination constrained the distances people could be from each other (Katz 2001). Creative inventions have continually extended these distances. As societies changed, new conceptions of time and space emerged as by-products of novel technologies and ways of acting in the world. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) break the bonds …

  • Reviving Evolutionary Psychology

    Open Access•Linnda R Caporael, Marilynn B Brewer•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1991•Citada por: 9•Referências: 14

This summary article discusses the impoverishment of biological reductionism and the limitations of genetic explanations for complex social arrangements. Because there are no direct links between evolutionary history and present behavior, theories of human evolution must be multidisciplinary. To escape the competitive individualism of sociobiological perspectives, we propose a new basis for evolutionary psychology that focuses on the group as the…

  • The Quest for Human Nature

    Open Access•Linnda R Caporael, Marilynn B Brewer•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1991•Citada por: 5•Referências: 6

Historically, evolutionary theory applied to human behavior has often been used to explain and justify existing social arrangements and institutions. Biological explanations of human social behavior tend to be ideologically and politically reactive. A politicized biology is an obstacle to socially responsible scientists who seek to use evolutionary theory in their work. The papers in this volume represent an attempt to recapture human evolutionar…

    Linnda R Caporael, Linnda Caporael•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1990

TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE Book Reviews 199 many were drawn to computing machinery by the practical need to carry out computations. The early history of the electronic computer has, quite naturally, received more scholarly attention than have the developments of the last two or three decades; books by Paul Ceruzzi, Herman Goldstine, and Michael Williams are among the best accounts of the early history. The rapid pace of developments in computing—even…

  • Selfishness examined

    Open Access•Linnda R Caporael, Robyn M Dawes et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral and Brain Sciences•1989

Social dilemmas occur when the pursuit of self-interest by individuals in a group leads to less than optimal collective outcomes for everyone in the group. A critical assumption in the human sciences is that people's choices in such dilemmas are individualistic, selfish, and rational. Hence, cooperation in the support of group welfare will only occur if there are selfish incentives that convert the social dilemma into a nondilemma. In recent year…

  • Computers, Prophecy, and Experience

    Open Access•Linnda R Caporael•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1984•Referências: 22

Although the opportunity for empirical investigation of the influence of computers on social norms, roles, and expectations in specific settings is relatively recent, the potential social impacts of the computer have been debated for 30 years. The foundations of discussions of the social effects of computers were founded on prophecies. These prophecies were influenced by an unrealistic perception of the computer as a “thinking machine,” value jud…

Linnda R Caporael, Marlene P Lukaszewski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1983•Citada por: 28

Elderly care receivers and their caregivers judged vocal nonverbal messages prepared from audiotapes of caregivers interacting with their co-workers and elderly nursing home residents. This study investigated the relationship between these judgments and, respectively, the functional ability of the aged judges and the expectations of the elderly held by the caregivers. The stimulus tape judged consisted of three types of messages: caregivers' spee…

A field study was conducted at a nursing home to (a) obtain descriptive information on the speech environment of the institutionalized elderly and (b) provide speech samples with which to conduct judgment studies on the paralinguistic features of caregiver communication. Three kinds of speech were differentiated: baby talk, speech to the elderly that was not in baby talk, and speech between caregivers, which was assumed to be normal adult speech.…
