Objectives Physical activity (PA) is a fundamental determinant of health. Healthcare workers (HCWs) play a key role in PA promotion but often face high workloads and organizational barriers limiting their own PA. Workplace programs may provide an opportunity to improve PA levels in this population. This study describes the feasibility and acceptability of MIAuSport , a workplace-based PA program for internal medicine residents in a Swiss Universi…
Heart rate variability response to low-frequency sounds vibrations in regularly active male subjects
Objective Low-Frequency Vibration (LFV) is a type of sound therapy used for relaxation and stress management. This study investigated the effects of LFV on heart rate variability (HRV), compared to a session without any vibrations (No-vibration) in healthy male participants. Methods Intra-individual comparative study: participants experienced two blinded 40-minutes sessions, separated by a week of wash-out period, a LFV and a No-vibration one, in…
The arena or E-games triathlon as a unique real world and virtual mixed-model endurance sports event
The sport of triathlon has evolved to become a discipline comprising races of different lengths and formats. It has also undergone significant growth in popularity and exposure with several variations in format from the classic swim – bike – run combination attracting significant television and media coverage. Since 2021 an original and unique format called the Arena Games Triathlon (or in 2024 the E-Games) has evolved that involves athletes comp…
Hamstring Muscle Injuries and Hamstring Specific Training in Elite Athletics (Track and Field) Athletes
Our present study reports that HMI is a characteristic of the athletics athletes' career, especially in disciplines involving sprinting. In these disciplines, athletes were performing higher volumes of hamstring stretching and sprinting than in other disciplines. Further studies should be conducted to better understand if and how HST are protective approaches for HMI in order to improve HMI risk reduction strategies
Augmented Cooper test
Running mechanics are modifiable with training and adopting an economical running technique can improve running economy and hence performance. While field measurement of running economy is cumbersome, running mechanics can be assessed accurately and conveniently using wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs). In this work, we extended this wearables-based approach to the Cooper test, by assessing the relative contribution of running biomechanic…
Key Nutritional Considerations for Youth Winter Sports Athletes to Optimize Growth, Maturation and Sporting Development
Despite a wealth of sport nutrition guidelines for adult athletes, there are currently no nutrition guidelines for youth winter sports athletes. Whilst it may be pragmatic to apply nutrition guidelines for adult athletes to youth winter sports athletes, it is inappropriate. Due to a paucity of research on youth athletes, it is impossible to provide evidence-based guidelines for this population, so careful extrapolation from the theoretical and pr…
Cardiorespiratory Fitness Mediates Cognitive Performance in Chronic Heart Failure Patients and Heart Transplant Recipients
We compared cognitive profiles in chronic heart failure patients (HF), heart transplant recipients (HT) and healthy controls (HC) and examined the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (V ̇O 2peak ), peak cardiac output (CO peak ) and cognitive performance. Stable HT patients ( n = 11), HF patients ( n = 11) and HC ( n = 13) (61.5 ± 8.5 years) were recruited. Four cognitive composite scores targeting different cognitive functions were co…
Relation of Team Size and Success With Injuries and Illnesses During Eight International Outdoor Athletics Championships
Introduction: The number of injuries and illnesses during major athletics championships vary according to sex and discipline. They may also differ between countries (national teams) given the differences in training, medical care, nutrition, lifestyle habits, and in travel to the championships. In addition, injuries and illnesses may influence the performance during the championships. Therefore, the aim was to analyse the differences in the injur…
Even a low-dose of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity reduces mortality by 22% in adults aged ≥60 years
