Drawing on data from various sources, the article assesses the extent of xenophobia and the potential support base for right‐wing extremism in the united Germany. The data shows that West Germany displayed a considerable level of xenophobia before unification, and that at present, Germans in east and west display strikingly similar patterns of hostility towards foreigners. In comparison to their European neighbours, however, the Germans are not m…

This article explores mass sentiment about the pursuit of unification in both East and West Germany from early 1989 to spring 1991, when formal unification was achieved and the first all-German government had been installed. Public opinion data from various sources show that the German masses were supportive but also somewhat reluctant with regard to quick and comprehensive unification. After a discussion of the role of ‘issues’ in models of voting behaviour, this article focuses on the degree of homogeneity of issue evaluations on the one hand and the match between issue evaluations and vote choice on the other. The utility of surveys for cross-national research
Maximizing utility at the polls? A replication of Himmelweit's ‘Consumer Model of Voting’ with German election data from 1983
A rational choice model of voting behaviour suggested by Himmelweit et al. is put to an empirical test in the context of the 1983 West German general election. Compared to the traditional measure of party identification, an indicator based on multi‐attribute utility theory (MAUT) considerations fails to be as dominant as in the original British data. However, specific context effects were at work in the German 1983 election. Also, the party ident…

This article explores the statistical properties as well as the substantial interpretation of coefficients arrived at by usual regression procedures when the de pendent variable is a dichotomy. Some practical advice is offered on how this traditional technique can be used as a proxy to the more refined approach suggested by Grizzle, Starmer, and Koch
