Genital swelling in females of the monogamous gibbon, Hylobates (H.) lar
Cyclical changes in the vulvae of five adult lar gibbons (Hylobates [H.] lar) were studied and compared with those of eight lowlandgorillas. The results reveal that the gibbons have relatively conspicuous and specialized sexual swellings that alter shape and appearance during the ovarian cycle. At maximum extent, the genital swellings of gorillas are relatively and absolutely smaller than those of gibbons, and lack the distinctive coloration seen…

Previous research on sexual behavior of the great apes suggests that female chimpanzees readily conceive in traditional laboratory pair tests, i.e., free‐access tests (FATS), but female gorillas and orang‐utans do not. Hand preference was assessed in 12 gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla ), 13 orang‐utans ( Pongo pygmaeus abelii ), and 9 gibbons ( Hylobates lar ) by using a floor retrieval task and a mesh retrieval task. Hand preference was also assessed in 8 gorillas and 8 orang‐utans by using a task involving the unfastening of a hasp. Laboratory studies of sexual behavior in gorillas and orang-utans produced few pregnancies despite the occurrence of mating, including mating during the midcycle, which is the presumptively ovulatory phase of the cycle.
