New geological record for the late Pleistocene chronostratigraphy, paleoecology and correlations across northern eurasia
The vast northern region of the West Siberian Lowlands still has relatively few detailed geological archives for the Late Quaternary, most of which are distributed along the Arctic coast. An extensive section of the Tyiakha River terrace and several neighboring outcrops provide a rich record of sedimentary, cryogenic and soil forming processes located in the inland part of this region. Detailed description together with particle size analysis, mo…
Archaeological and geoarchaeological properties of functional areas at the Upper Paleolithic site of Zaraysk, East European plain
This study investigates the archaeological and geoarchaeological properties of a cultural layer at the Upper Paleolithic site of Zaraysk. We examine the human impact on soil properties within several functional areas using a multiproxy approach including physical, geochemical, and biogeochemical methods. The percentage of organic carbon most likely added by various human activities was estimated by applying a new approach using n -alkane contents…
Archaeometrical study of ceramic materials from the Chupícuaro culture (Formative Period, Mesoamerica)
This study investigated the Chupícuaro ceramic production in Formative Mesoamerica through geochemical and petrographic examinations of a large set of Chupícuaro ceramic vessel sherds. The results are consistent with local domestic production using locally available resources, both for clays and for pigments of the painted decorations. Several production sites with their own sources of raw materials would have co‐existed in the Acámbaro Valley, c…

The Use of Innovative Techniques to Decodify Early Anthropic Activity in the Sonoran Desert (NW Mexico)
The Early Agriculture Period (EAP) in the southwest of USA and northwest of Mexico began just after the Altithermal period (7500–4500 years BP). During the EAP, agricultural societies cultivated corn and constructed canals for irrigation; however, searching for the sites of this period and reconstruction of the ancient activities surrounding them meets difficulties and requires the development of geoarchaeological indicators. The present study ai…
Magnetic properties as indicators of pedogenic and pyrogenic processes at the Upper Paleolithic site of Kostenki 14
In geoarchaeological studies, there is an issue with distinguishing between natural and anthropogenic signals in pedological paleoarchives. With the pedostratigraphy of the Upper Paleolithic site of Kostenki 14, this issue is reflected by problems with the determination of features of pedogenic and pyrogenic processes. This issue was addressed by means of a thorough analysis of the magnetic properties of paleosols accompanied by micromorphologica…
Evidence for stages of landscape evolution in Central Mexico during the late Quaternary from paleosol-pedosediment sequences
Paleosols interbedded with pyroclastic deposits have been proven to be an important paleoenvironmental proxy for the late Quaternary in Central Mexico. We studied a key upland section and several profiles on the slopes and lowlands of the Tlaxcala Block, assuming that the topographic variability of the soil-sedimentary mantle contains the complete record of the landscape history. The upland section included three paleosols separated by tepetates …

A multiproxy record of sedimentation, pedogenesis, and environmental history in the north of West Siberia during the late Pleistocene based on the Belaya Gora section
Recent revision of the Pleistocene glaciation boundaries in northern Eurasia has encouraged the search for nonglacial geological records of the environmental history of northern West Siberia. We studied an alluvial paleosol-sedimentary sequence of the high terrace of the Vakh River (middle Ob basin) to extract the indicators of environmental change since Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 6. Two levels of the buried paleosols are attributed to MIS…
Rock varnish as a natural canvas for rock art in La Proveedora, northwestern Sonoran Desert (Mexico)
Black clayey soil (Vertisol) in the Lerma valley, Michoacán, North‐Central Mexico
Catastrophic events (climatic, tectonic, volcanic, etc.) frequently cause geomorphological instability, which interrupts normal pedogenesis and switches the processes of surface erosion and/or sedimentation. These processes have an effect on the distribution of ancient settlements and can be the cause of the abandonment of cities. In the Lerma Valley, particularly in the Tres Mezquites area, surveys and extensive excavations have been conducted t…

Reworked volcaniclastic deposits from the Usumacinta river, Mexico
The origin and distribution of volcanic glass temper in Maya ceramics has attracted the attention of Mesoamerican archaeologists for the last 80 years. Several Quaternary volcanoes, particularly those in the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA), are proposed as the source of tephra in the Maya region, however, a continuous stratigraphic record of this tephra deposit is still lacking. A reworked volcaniclastic deposit (9 ± 2 ka) was located in the…

Paleogeography of Kostenki-14 (Markina Gora)
Multidisciplinary geological and paleogeographical studies have demonstrated that the so-called humus strata in the deluvial apron of Kostenki-14 are paleosols of various origins. It has been shown that cryogenic deformations in the section were mainly caused by block displacements of the entire sequence rather than by solifluction. At the time corresponding to the earliest cultural layer IVb (ca 37–36 ka BP), a flat linear hollow with a brook at…
The Black San Pablo Paleosol of the Teotihuacan Valley, Mexico
Although archaeologists have generally assumed that the ancient landscape in the Teotihuacan Valley was somewhat similar to the present day, recent research has documented large‐scale modification of the soil by accelerated human‐induced erosion–sedimentation processes from the pre‐Hispanic and Colonial periods up until the present. Consequently, the Formative and Classic period soil (approximately 400 B.C.–A.D. 650) is buried in most of the Teot…
Radiocarbon Dates from Soil Profiles in the Teotihuacán Valley, Mexico
Radiocarbon dates largely obtained from bulk soil samples in 24 soil profiles in the Teotihuacán Valley, Mexico, are reported insofar as they represent a first step towards developing a sequence of soil formation, erosion, vegetation change, and human impact during the Holocene. Limitations of 14 C dating in the area are considered, particularly the absence of charcoal in sediments and poor preservation of pollen. A broad temporal scheme is propo…
