Trends in social inequality in mortality in Denmark 1995–2019
BACKGROUND: During the past decades, social inequality in mortality has increased in several countries, including Denmark. Modifiable risk factors, such as smoking and harmful alcohol consumption, have been suggested to moderate the association between socioeconomic position and health-related outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the contribution of smoking- and alcohol-related deaths to the trends in educational inequality in mortalit…
Health and health-care utilisation in old age
A growing number of older men are living alone. They are often referred to as an at-risk group in health-care systems. The purpose of this article is to establish an overview of these men's health and health-care utilisation. We do so by drawing on three sources: an online survey with health-care professionals, data from a national self-report health study and register-based data on health-care utilisation. The results show that older men living …
Alcohol‐attributed disease burden in four Nordic countries between 2000 and 2017
Patient-reported outcomes, sociodemographic and clinical factors are associated with 1-year mortality in patients with ischemic heart disease—findings from the DenHeart cohort study
Associations between music and health-related outcomes in adult non-musicians, amateur musicians and professional musicians-Results from a nationwide Danish study
Previous research in music and health suggests differential long-term health implications for amateur versus professional musicians. The present study focused on (a) self-rated health of adult amateur musicians and professional musicians compared to non-musicians; (b) associations between self-reported music in early childhood homes and choice of staying musically active as adults; (c) associations between involvement in music in one's early chil…
Healthcare Access and Quality Index based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990–2015
BACKGROUND: National levels of personal health-care access and quality can be approximated by measuring mortality rates from causes that should not be fatal in the presence of effective medical care (ie, amenable mortality). Previous analyses of mortality amenable to health care only focused on high-income countries and faced several methodological challenges. In the present analysis, we use the highly standardised cause of death and risk factor …
Health profile for Danish adults with activity limitation
Danish adults with AL experience a poorer health and well-being, and have an unhealthier lifestyle and poorer social relations than adults without AL. People with activity limitation should be prioritized in public health and efforts done to secure availability and flexibility of health care services and primary prevention programs. Policies should address accessibility, availability and affordability of health care and health behaviour among peo…
Music and public health
Background: ‘Music and public health’ is a new field of study. Few scientific studies with small samples have documented health implications of musical participation. Research questions in this epidemiological study were: 1) Is there an association between self-rated health and active use of music in daily life? 2) What associations can be observed between musical background, uses and understanding of music as a health factor, and self-reported h…
Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks in 188 countries, 1990–2013
Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life years (Dalys) for 306 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (Hale) for 188 countries, 1990–2013
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 301 acute and chronic diseases and injuries in 188 countries, 1990–2013
Music and public health – An empirical study of the use of music in the daily life of adult Danes and the health implications of musical participation
Background: Music and public health is a fairly new field of study. Scientific studies document that participation in cultural activities (in general) can have a positive influence on health, however, music as a specific cultural activity has only been explored empirically in studies with small samples, mainly focusing on health benefits of participating in choral singing. Methods: This study originates from and was part of the Danish Health and …
Global, regional, and national incidence and mortality for HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria during 1990–2013
Global, regional, and national levels and causes of maternal mortality during 1990–2013
Global, regional, and national levels of neonatal, infant, and under-5 mortality during 1990–2013
BACKGROUND: Remarkable financial and political efforts have been focused on the reduction of child mortality during the past few decades. Timely measurements of levels and trends in under-5 mortality are important to assess progress towards the Millennium Development Goal 4 (MDG 4) target of reduction of child mortality by two thirds from 1990 to 2015, and to identify models of success. METHODS: We generated updated estimates of child mortality i…
Survey nonresponse among ethnic minorities in a national health survey – a mixed-method study of participation, barriers, and potentials
Nonresponse appears related to linguistic and/or educational limitations, to alienation generated by the questions' focus on disease and cultural assumptions, or mistrust regarding anonymity. Ethnic minorities seem particularly affected by such barriers. To increase survey participation, questions could be sensitized to reflect multicultural traditions, and the impact of sender and setting considered
Inequalities in mortality among refugees and immigrants compared to native Danes – a historical prospective cohort study
Mortality patterns were overall advantageous for refugees and immigrants compared with native Danes. Research should concentrate on disentangling the reasons behind migrants' health advantages, in order to enlighten future preventive public-health efforts, for the benefit of the entire population

The Burden of Selected Diseases Among Older People in Denmark
Because of comorbidity, more years of illness are to be expected if lethal diseases are to be eliminated. Elimination of nonfatal diseases would mainly transfer years with long-standing illness to years without illness
Impact of smoking on the social gradient in health expectancy in Denmark
Study objective: Health expectancy is arrived at by dividing life expectancy into average lifetime in different states of health. The purpose of the study was to estimate health expectancy among never smokers and smokers in groups at high, medium, and low educational levels in Denmark. Design: Life tables for never smokers and smokers with a high, medium, and low educational level were constructed on the basis of Statistics Denmark registers and …
Abstention from smoking extends life and compresses morbidity
Smoking reduces the expected lifetime in good health and increases the expected lifetime in poor health
The Thule episode epidemiological follow up after the crash of a B-52 bomber in Greenland
STUDY OBJECTIVES--The aim was to explore the pattern of disease in staff associated with a bomber that crashed in 1968 when carrying nuclear bombs. DESIGN--The database was constructed from staff files of Danish workers employed from 1 April 1963 to 1 July 1971. Comparison was made between subsequent mortality and hospital admissions of workers employed during the clean up of the crashed bomber, and those employed outside this period. SETTING--Th…
