  • Radiocarbon and Luminescence Age Determinations on Mounds at Crystal River and Roberts Island, Florida, USA

    Open Access•Thomas J Pluckhahn, Alex Hodson et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2015•Citada por: 6•Referências: 14

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has been employed successfully to determine the ages of palaeosols from earthen mounds in the southeastern USA, providing archaeologists with a means of dating monument construction in the absence of carbonaceous materials and geologists with a setting for understanding factors that can affect the luminescence intensity (i.e., burial dose) of soils. However, OSL dating has not been adequately tested on moun…

  • Geochronology of Ailuropoda–Stegodon fauna and Gigantopithecus in Guangxi Province, southern China

    Open Access•W J Rink, Wenyu Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Pleistocene faunas from south China are difficult to subdivide based on the long temporal ranges of many taxa and a reduced number of genera in comparison to faunas from temperate north China. In south China, the Ailuropoda–Stegodon fauna is a very general one and includes a relatively stable suite of genera that apparently persisted for long periods of time. These attributes have made constraining its time range difficult. Application of electro…

  • Dating the geometric Nasca lines in the Peruvian desert

    Open Access•W J Rink, J Bartoll•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2005•Citada por: 5•Referências: 9

The Nasca lines are geoglyphs - arrays of stones forming geometric shapes constructed by ancient humans, the largest ones occupying areas of more than 1km2. The authors used optically stimulated luminescence dating of quartz buried when the stone lines were constructed to give new dates for contexts associated with geoglyphs on high mesetas near Palpa. They conclude that the stone lines at sites at San Ignacio and Sacramento were constructed betw…

    Open Access•W J Rink, H P Schwarcz•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2004•Citada por: 3•Referências: 7

Electron spin resonance (ESR) dating of tooth enamel and U‐series dating of adjacent dentine was carried out on samples obtained from Layers II‐6 and II‐7 from the lower Paleolithic site of Gesher Benot Ya'aqov, Israel. The combined ESR/U‐series age estimate of these layers was found to be 652 ± 29 ka. The samples were collected about 2–4.5 m above the Brunhes‐Matuyama (B/M) chron boundary at the site. Goren‐Inbar et al. [(2000). Pleistocene mile…

  • The ESR geochronology and geology of the open‐air Palaeolithic deposits in Bollschweil, Germany

    Open Access•W J Rink, Andrew W Kandel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2002•Referências: 13

This paper presents ESR (electron spin resonance) ages of rhinoceros and equine tooth enamel from the open‐air Palaeolithic site of Bollschweil on the western edge of the Black Forest near Freiburg, Germany. Bollschweil is one of very few archaeological sites in southern Germany to yield Lower or Middle Palaeolithic faunal and lithic materials from a buried, open‐air context. The geological context of the archaeological remains indicates that the…

  • Dating methods for sediments of caves and rockshelters with examples from the Mediterranean Region

    Open Access•H P Schwarcz, W J Rink•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2001

A wide range of potential dating methods may be applied to archaeological deposits found in caves and rockshelters, depending on the nature of the deposit and age range of the deposit. Organic sediments, including faunal and floral material, can be dated by radiocarbon (AMS and high-sensitivity beta-counting). Many karstic features contain speleothems which can be dated with high accuracy by U-series. Wind-blown detritus, where it is the dominant…

Hominid fossils from Ngandong and Sambungmacan, Central Java, are considered the most morphologically advanced representatives of Homo erectus. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and mass spectrometric U-series dating of fossil bovid teeth collected from the hominid-bearing levels at these sites gave mean ages of 27 ± 2 to 53.3 ± 4 thousand years ago; the range in ages reflects uncertainties in uranium migration histories. These ages are 20,000 to 400…
