  • Unprovenanced Anatomical Crania

    Open Access•Amber M Plemons, Rhian R Dunn et al.•ARTICLE•Humans•2026

Unprovenanced skeletal remains housed in anatomy laboratories, medical schools, and museums present a persistent ethical challenge when the human skeletal remains potentially represent historically marginalized or legally protected populations. Reliance on a single line of evidence, like epitaphonomic indicators or population affinity estimates, may result in incomplete or misleading assessments. Herein, we present a structured, non-destructive p…

  • Accessibility and Educational Standards in Human Osteology through Digital Learning Practices

    Amber M Plemons, Micayla C Spiros•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2025

This article explores the growing use of digital tools in teaching human osteology, highlighting the need for standardized educational practices in biological anthropology and proposing ways to enhance accessibility and ethical guidelines through digital pedagogy. Digital tools are becoming more prominent in the teaching and education of human skeletal remains. Currently, no standards exist regarding educational practices utilizing digital pedago…

  • Quantifying Sexual Dimorphism in Scapular Morphology

Savannah Holcombe, Joseph T Hefner et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2025

This project explores sexual differences in scapular morphology through linear measurements (LMs) and geometric morphometric (GM) methods. Traditional LMs assess size while GM methods primarily assess shape. Our two hypotheses are as follows: the human scapula expresses sexual dimorphism in both size and shape, and given that shape differences exist, this bone will producehigher correct classification rates when assessed for sex using GM rather t…

  • We Think There's Been a Glitch

Micayla C Spiros, Micayla Spiros et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2024

Forensic anthropology plays a pivotal role in the medicolegal system analyzing skeletal remains in forensic casework. With the increased incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), their continued application in the field promisesenhanced efficiency and accuracy in identification processes, trauma analyses, and decision-making. However, the integration of AI/ML also raises critical ethical concerns. The use of any tec…

  • Elder Abuse in Forensic Anthropology

Micayla C Spiros, Micayla Spiros et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2024

This case study reviews the use of forensic anthropology in the investigation of elder abuse. The objectives of this article are to (1) review the minimal literature related to elder abuse in the forensic anthropology and bioarchaeological record, highlighting the importance of the healing continuum and pathological influences; (2) outline the theoretical frameworks that can be applied to forensic anthropological research into elder abuse; and (3…

  • Maceration Techniques for Human Fetal and Perinatal Bone

Rhian Dunn, Rhian R Dunn et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2023

Forensic anthropologists working with cases that vary in stages of decomposition are often required to process and macerate remains to complete a forensic analysis. Maceration techniques vary between laboratories, and procedures to facilitate maceration of fetal and perinatal remains are lacking in the literature. This descriptive case study evaluates the use of several maceration techniques for fetal and perinatal remains (n = 2), including cold…

  • Using Eye-Tracking Technology to Quantify the Effect of Experience and Education on Forensic Anthropological Analyses

Micayla C Spiros, Micayla Spiros et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2022

The human interpretation of analytical outputs is a significant challenge in forensic science, making it vital to explore the application of protocols as we enhance our practices. This study assesses decision making in forensic anthropological analyses utilizing eye-tracking technology to quantify an observer's estimate of confidence and reliability. Ten individuals with varying levels of education and experience were asked to score cranial morph…

  • Standardization of Postcranial Nonmetric Traits and Their Utility in Ancestry Analysis

    Micayla C Spiros•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2019•Citada por: 1

Throughout the forensic anthropology and archaeology disciplines, postcranial nonmetric traits have varied in name, descriptions, and scoring methodology. This research focuses on synthesizing the literature to select the most prevalent traits, standardize their definitions, and create corresponding line drawings for each trait. By defining and illustrating each trait and its different states, a novel visual approach for scoring a suite of 11 pos…
