Influence of early life environment on later life mortality in catastrophic and non-catastrophic medieval skeletal series from Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic, 13th–16th century)
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether the early life environment, broadly characterized by adult lower-limb long bone metrics, is related to later mortality under normal and catastrophic conditions. MATERIALS: The sample for the study was composed of adult human skeletal remains excavated from a medieval cemetery from the 13th to 16th century in Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Czech Republic) (n = 390) under catastrophic (n = 242) and non-catastro…
Life and death in the medieval mining centre of Kutná Hora - reconstructing diets during the recurrent mortality crises of the 14th century AD (Czechia)
During the 14th century, the inhabitants of Kutná Hora, an important urban centre in the Kingdom of Bohemia, were exposed to recurrent mortality crises. Using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, this study investigates the relationship between diet and the famine of 1318 and the plague outbreaks after 1346. Together with a comparative sample from regular graves, a total of 112 bone samples were collected, supplemented by 70 first permanent molar…
Bayesian modeling of a medieval plague and famine mass graves from Sedlec-Kutná Hora, Czech Republic
Plague and famine are two of the worst killers in human history. Both struck the Czech lands in the Middle Ages not long after each other (the famine of 1318 CE and the plague of 1348–1350 CE). The aim of our study was to try to relate the mass graves found in the vicinity of the Chapel of All Saints with an ossuary in the Kutná Hora–Sedlec site to these two specific events. For this purpose, we used stratigraphic and archaeological data, radioca…
První výsledky rekonstrukce stravy jedinců pohřbených u hřbitovního karneru Všech svatých v Kutné Hoře – Sedlci
Příspěvek představuje první výsledky izotopové analýzy stravy jedinců pohřbených u hřbitovního karneru Všech svatých v Kutné Hoře – Sedlci (13.–14. stol.). Izotopové hodnoty uhlíku (δ13C) a dusíku (δ15N) byly měřeny v kostní tkáni celkem 24 jedinců pohřbených v individuálních hrobech.
Early stress variation reflected in adult vertebral neural canal size within a medieval silver-mining population from Kutná Hora (Czech Republic)
Previous bioarchaeological and auxological research has indicated that stunting the growth of vertebral measures, specifically those of the vertebral neural canal (VNC), provides a record of stressful early-childhood episodes that persists into adulthood. The main goal of this study was to investigate possible VNC size variation within the specific context of a medieval silver-mining site. Skeletons unearthed recently at Kutná Hora–Sedlec (Czech …
Wealth or Just Job Seekers
Kutná Hora entered the 14th century as a rich, prosperous, and densely-populated city producing tons of silver. Such an amount of precious metal could not be mined and processed without an influx of people from other cities and rural areas and without the contribution of skilled specialists from abroad. Despite the apparent wealth of the city, its inhabitants (either settled or newly arrived) experienced and died during mortality crises. Evidence…
Strong but not Unbeatable
This paper presents two cases of healed skull trauma recovered from medieval mass burial sites in Kutná Hora-Sedlec (Kutná Hora District/CZ). These recently unearthed burial pits are historically and contextually associated with two key catastrophes: (1) a famine in the early 14th century; and (2) the Black Death in the mid-14th century. The first skull presents evidence of survival from severe cranial injury with highly probable surgical interve…
Entre peste et famine
The later centuries of the Middle Ages were a time of recurrent epidemics and famines, some of which caused such huge mortality that mass graves and emergency burial grounds had to be created. Several anthropological studies have investigated these graves and cemeteries, but only a few have attempted to assess the bioarchaeological features that could distinguish between these two types of crisis. Our study tackles this question through an anthro…
Bioarchaeology of Past Epidemic- and Famine-Related Mass Burials with Respect to Recent Findings from the Czech Republic
Mass burials are reported under different contexts and from all time periods. It represents a method for disposing of human remains when there are too many bodies to contend with at one time. Such graves are typically the result of increased mortality due to epidemic, famine, war, genocide, sacrifice, or natural disaster To date, many mass graves have been unearthed throughout Europe both in urban and rural contexts and have mostly been attribute…
Diachronic changes in size and shape of human proximal tibia in Central Europe during the latest 1200 years
The shape variability of human tibial epiphyses in an early medieval Great Moravian population (9th–10th century AD)
Limb bone morphology is influenced by external factors, including changes in subsistence and socioeconomic shifts. The aim of this study was to identify and describe any trends in morphological variation in human tibial epiphyses within an early medieval population of central Europe using surface scanning and geometric morphometric methods. The results are discussed in terms of three potential sources of variation in shape variability: sexual dim…
