  • Infrequent Identity Signals, Multiple Correspondence, and Detection Risks in Audit Correspondence Studies

Open Access•Catherine Balfe, Patrick Button et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

Audit correspondence studies are field experiments that test for discriminatory behavior in active markets. Researchers measure discrimination by comparing how responsive individuals (“audited units”) are to correspondences from different types of people. This article elaborates on the tradeoffs researchers face between sending audited units only one correspondence and sending them multiple correspondences, especially when including less common i…

  • Does Ageist Language in Job Ads Predict Age Discrimination in Hiring

Ian Burns, Ian Burn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2022

We study the relationships between ageist stereotypes - as reflected in the language used in job ads - and age discrimination in hiring, exploiting the text of job ads and differences in callbacks to older and younger job applicants from a resume (correspondence study) field experiment (Neumark, Burn, and Button, 2019). Our analysis uses computational linguistics and machine learning methods to examine, in a field-experiment setting, ageist stere…

  • Can tax incentives create a local film industry? Evidence from Louisiana and New Mexico

    Patrick Button•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2018•Citada por: 4•Referências: 5

State Film Incentives (SFIs) are a recent and popular economic development incentive. I study these through case studies of two prominent SFIs: those in Louisiana and New Mexico, using the Abadie et al. (2010) synthetic control case study method. This allows me to estimate the effect of SFIs relative to the "business-as-usual": what would have happened without SFIs. I estimate the effects of these SFIs on filming location, using databases from IM…

  • Is It Harder for Older Workers to Find Jobs? New and Improved Evidence from a Field Experiment

David Neumark, Ian Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2018•Citada por: 22•Referências: 3

We design and implement a large-scale resume correspondence study to address limitations of existing field experiments testing for age discrimination that may bias their results. One limitation that may bias results is giving older and younger applicants similar experience to make them "otherwise comparable." A second limitation is that greater unobserved differences in human capital investment of older applicants may bias the results against fin…

  • Expanding Employment Discrimination Protections for Individuals with Disabilities

    Open Access•Patrick Button•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 42

Effective 2001, California passed the Prudence Kay Poppink Act, which broadened California's disability employment discrimination law to cover individuals with less-severe disabilities by lowering the burden of proof to establish a disability. Using both difference-in-differences and difference-in-difference-in-differences regression analyses and data from the Current Population Survey, the author estimates how this act affected the labor market …

  • Did Age Discrimination Protections Help Older Workers Weather the Great Recession

    Open Access•David Neumark, Patrick Button•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2014•Citada por: 6•Referências: 1

We examine whether stronger age discrimination laws at the state level moderated the impact of the Great Recession on older workers. We use a difference‐in‐difference‐in‐differences strategy to compare older and younger workers, in states with stronger and weaker laws, before, during, and after the Great Recession. We find very little evidence that stronger age discrimination protections helped older workers weather the Great Recession, relative …
