Metabolic dysfunction-associated steaotic liver disease self-management among the Hispanic/Latino population
Introduction Hispanic/Latino populations in the U.S. have the highest prevalence of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steaotic Liver Disease (MASLD), and diet and exercise management are crucial for controlling the disease. While quantitative research on general diet and physical activity within this population exists, studies specifically addressing the quantitative analysis of self-management behaviors in Hispanic/Latino individuals with MASLD a…
Experiences of Discrimination in Medical Settings in a Pregnant Population with Low Income
Our findings highlight the high prevalence of DMS in a pregnant population with low income. This study adds to existing calls for providers to be mindful of patients' lifetime experiences in the community that may impact their perception of care in medical settings
Teen Mothers’ Family Support and Adult Identity in the Emerging Adulthood
We examined the prospective role of parental support and adult identity profiles in the transition to adulthood on teen mothers’ socioeconomic outcomes in adulthood. Analyses were based on the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a nationally representative sample of youth followed over a decade. We used data from Waves 1, 3, and 4 (mean age = 28.6, Wave 4). Analytical sample consisted of 981 females who gave birth before ag…
Mission of Mercy emergency dental clinics
The 2014 Mid-Maryland Mission of Mercy emergency dental clinic attracted people with risk factors for oral and chronic diseases. Those with one or more risk factors were more likely to receive oral surgery (specifically, tooth extraction). These findings strongly suggest that organizers of MOM emergency dental clinics include wrap-around primary care, health promotion and disease prevention services along with provision of dental services. While …
African American Girls' Ideal Dating Relationship Now and in the Future
Adolescence is a particularly important and challenging time for developing long-lasting romantic relationship patterns. However, limited empirical research has explored teen perceptions of ideal partner characteristics during adolescence or their significance to the quality of current and future relationships. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 33 African American high school girls to shed light on the qualities desired in t…
The Symbolic Value and Limitations of Racial Concordance in Minority Research Engagement
The well-documented underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in research demands action. The field of health disparities research, however, lacks scientific consensus about how best to respectfully recruit underrepresented minority populations in research. We explore the investigators' perspective regarding how their own racial and ethnic background influenced their ability to recruit minorities, including (a) the influence of racial c…
The Relationship Between Education and Prostate-Specific Antigen Testing Among Urban African American Medicare Beneficiaries
If You Don’t Have Honesty in a Relationship, Then There Is No Relationship”
Policymaking Under Uncertainty
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue affecting around three million U.S. women during their lifetimes; this article provides guidance to policymakers on addressing IPV. In 2011, an Institute of Medicine panel recommended routine IPV screening for women and adolescents as part of comprehensive preventive care services, which is in conflict with the 2004 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations. The curren…
Exploring Risk Factors in Latino Cardiovascular Disease
Objectives. We examined 3 cardiovascular disease risk factors by nativity and gender, evaluating evidence for education and health behaviors in explaining the “Hispanic Health Paradox.” Methods. We analyzed 2001–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data for adults (n = 6032) to compare hypertension, high waist circumference, and diabetes for US- and foreign-born Mexican men and women. We controlled for age, depression, and health…
Building a Navigation System to Reduce Cancer Disparities Among Urban Black Older Adults
The incorporation of community-based participatory research principles into each facet of this patient navigation program facilitated the attainment of the intervention's objectives. This patient navigation program successfully delivered cancer navigation services to 1,302 urban Black older adults. Appropriately recruited, selected and trained CHWs monitored by an experienced supervisor and investigators are the key elements in a patient navigati…
Improving Informed Consent with Minority Participants
Strengthening the informed consent process is one avenue for improving recruitment of minorities into research. This study examines that process from two different perspectives, that of researchers and that of African American and Latino community members. Through the use of two separate surveys, we compared strategies used by researchers with the preferences and attitudes of community members during the informed consent process. Our data suggest…
Toward a Fourth Generation of Disparities Research to Achieve Health Equity
Achieving health equity, driven by the elimination of health disparities, is a goal of Healthy People 2020. In recent decades, the improvement in health status has been remarkable for the U.S. population as a whole. However, racial and ethnic minority populations continue to lag behind whites with a quality of life diminished by illness from preventable chronic diseases and a life span cut short by premature death. We examine a conceptual framewo…
Postpartum Mothers' Disclosure of Abuse, Role, and Conflict
Experts evaluating evidence of the occurrence and effects of abuse before, during, and after pregnancy have called for research on the context within which violence occurs. This study elicited postpartum mothers' perceptions of roles and conflict in their abusive intimate relationships. Thirty newly delivered African-, Anglo-, and Hispanic-American abused mothers consented to be interviewed. While ethnicity, cultural norms, and economic issues fr…
Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse among Active Duty Military Women
In a sample of 616 active duty military women, 30% reported adult lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical and/or sexual assault. The prevalence of IPV during the time of military service was 21.6%. Lifetime prevalence of any abuse, including emotional abuse and/or stalking, was 44.3%. Risk factors for IPV (lifetime and while in the military) from multivariate logistic regression were separated or divorced marital status (odd…
