Mothers from an urban poor group in a Philippine city were recruited within three months of delivery and followed for one year in monthly interviews to determine infant feeding practices and the timing and causes of changes. Particular attention was paid to breastfeeding. Of those seen before delivery, 95 percent initiated breastfeeding. Dietary intervention and growth of infants and toddlers in a Philippine rural community
A longitudinal, pretest‐posttest design using purposive sampling was employed to determine the effect of dietary intervention without environmental modifications on the nutritional status of 48 normal or mildly malnourished infants and toddlers in a rural Philippine community. The 24 experimental subjects were provided daily with food supplements so that their total diet met recommended dietary allowances. Data on physical growth, clinical signs …
Maintenance and termination of breast feeding in rural and urban Philippine communities
Three samples of Filipino mothers from urban and rural settings with at least 1 baby less than 2 years of age were interviewed. There was a unanimous preference for breastfeeding. About 90% succeeded in starting breastfeeding and at least half continued until the baby was at least 1 year old. Those who failed cited no milk or insufficient milk, or that the mother had an acute or chronic illness at the time of delivery, as reasons for termination …
Protection and Pride in Maranao Childhood
Childbearing and rearing activities of 160 Maranao mothers were described and an emphasis on protection and pride was inferred as the guiding goals of these families for their children. The Maranao are a conservative Muslim group in the southern Philippines. Running Amok
THIS study examines twenty-four cases of amok, believed the largest number J number of cases ever collected. They were observed in Sarawak, East Malaysia. They occurred in all indigenous groups in Sarawak, excluding the Chinese, such as Malay, Sea Dayak, Land Dayak, Kayan, Punan and Melanau at frequencies more or less following the proportion of these groups in the total population. Four field studies of aspects of modernization in the Philippines are summarized: transitory ownership of space in a city, the development of the fishing industry in a provincial town, the practices of market vendors, and the development of modern attitudes. Behavior, Malnutrition, and Mental Development
Of 56 children 6 to 36 months of age tested in a mountain village in the Philippines, 16 were too sick to respond to the testing situation. An additional 15 with histories of severe malnutrition obtained very low scores on the Bayley Scale. Two alternative hypotheses of the psychological impact of planned social change in the lowland Philippines were investigated. (1) Planned social change produces social reinforcement which leads to a more content population; or (2) it leads to a cycle of rising expectations which outstrip actual accomplishment, the result of which is dissatisfaction and hostility-especially among young people.
