Hyksos
The term “Hyksos” is a Hellenized version of the Egyptian term, Heqau Khasut (ḥqꜢw ḫꜢswt), “Rulers of foreign countries” – a term originally used generally to refer to foreign chieftains, but adopted, according to the Royal Canon of Turin and monumental evidence, by the rulers of the 15th Dynasty for official use and by contemporary vassal‐dynasties of Canaanite descent.

Avaris/Tell el‐Dab'a
An overview of the history and archaeology of the site of Avaris/Tell el‐Dab'a, which served as the capital of the 15th Dynasty Hyksos kings during the seventeenth to sixteenth centuries bc .
Multi-isotopic study of diet and mobility in the northeastern Nile Delta
The origin of the Hyksos dynasty (c. 1638-1530 BCE) is thought to be rooted in the Near East given the architectural features and burial customs present at the site of Tell el-Dabca, identified as the capital of Hyksos rule in the Eastern Delta of Egypt. We expand previous 87Sr/86Sr research on the site's cemetery assemblage using a multi-isotopic methodology: oxygen (δ18O) and carbon (δ13Ccarb) stable isotopes from the carbonate portion of tooth…
The Enigma of the Hyksos Volume I
At the end of the Early Bronze Age, people were clearly on the move, settlements were abandoned and the reasons for this phenomenon, either political, economic, ecological or social in nature, are partly still mysterious. Although differentiated regional clusters are in many cases still not easy to pinpoint, it becomes clear that the ‘Greater Levantine Area’, was, despite all differences, embedded into networks of interregional connectivity most …

Radiocarbon and the date of the Thera eruption
The criticism of the date of the olive tree branch from Thera offered by Cherubini et al. (above) has to be fully supported. The attribution of the branch in question to the late part of the seventeenth century BC is by itself not unexpected, as most of the other radiocarbon dates of short-lived samples from the site of Akrotiri fall into the second half of that century. The attempt to produce a wiggle-match drawn from a succession of non-existen…
Peru‐nefer
Peru‐nefer was a famous naval base of Thutmose III and Amenhotep II that, after a brief interlude, regained prominence from the late 18th Dynasty through the 19th Dynasty.

Avaris/Tell el‐Dab'a
Ancient Avaris (Greek rendering of the Ancient Egyptian toponym Hw.t war.t) was the capital of the Hyksos, and was conquered by Ahmose I ca. 1530 BCE , as we know from a tomb inscription of his namesake, the naval officer Ahmose, the son of Ibana in El‐Kab.
The Chronology of Tell El-Daba
Radiocarbon dating at the Tell el-Daba site in the Nile Delta has created an enigma for many years. Despite great efforts, the difference of about 120 yr between the chronology based on 14 C dates and the one based on archaeological evidence linked to the Egyptian historical chronology has not been solved. In order to foster open discussions on this discrepancy, we present here the results of 40 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measuremen…

Walt Whitman, Our Great Gay Poet
This article surveys the critical debates around Walt Whitman's “Calamus” cluster, arguing that a “queer” reading of Whitman—one that does not see him as, for example, a closeted homosexual who censored his work for fear of being “outed”—is both historically accurate and politically efficacious. While previous efforts to reclaim Whitman as “our great gay poet” are understandable—particularly given critical readings of Whitman that denied the homo…

In his article in BSA 93 (1998) 199–219, Eric Cline comments on the recent discoveries at the site of Tell el-Dab c a, where palatial quarters of the late Hyksos Period and the early 18th Dynasty have been discovered. For Aegean scholars the most spectacular finds from these excavations were numerous fragments of wall paintings which were identified as Minoan by experts working at the excavations and visiting colleagues. Egypt and Canaan during the Middle Bronze Age
The existence of Middle Bronze Age remains within the fine stratification of Tell el-Dabʿa brings about the possibility of a new direct link to Egyptian cultural sequence and absolute chronology. Recent seriation studies of Egyptian pottery also add to the precision of dating by allowing cross links with other well-dated assemblages in Egypt. The evaluation shows that hitherto popular schemes for Palestinian chronology have to be lowered in relat…
