From exclusion to responses
Migrants living in informal settlements face overlapping health and environmental vulnerabilities shaped by exclusion from formal housing and essential services. Un Nuevo Amanecer, an informal settlement located on a former landfill on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile, illustrates these dynamics. Rising housing costs and precarious labour conditions have pushed migrants to self-construct housing on land with limited state oversight. This qualitat…

Addressing health inequalities and barriers to access among adolescent migrants in Chile
Adolescent migrants in Chile face important social inequalities in health compared to locals and additional barriers to exercise their right to health, putting their current and future health at risk. The legal path for priority setting in Chile
Health systems have committed their path to universal health coverage using health planning to accomplish their goals of efficiency, equity and sustainability. Chile, a high-income country with a public-private mix health system, has made significant progress through several successive health policies implemented in the last 20 years which have been consistent with this approach. However, in the last 5 years, the national congress has produced se…
Challenges for the prevention of hypertension among international migrants in Latin America
Among the health priorities of international migrants, non-communicable diseases such as hypertension are of major interest due to their increasing prevalence, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. Social policies that address unequal socioeconomic and spatial distribution in depressive symptoms and treatment are required

We found significant inequities in adequate housing between migrant populations and locals in Chile, and some inequities among both populations based on structural socioeconomic deprivation. Experiencing hazardous situations emerged as a social determinant of health among international migrants in 2022, potentially suggesting growing challenges related to social exclusion in urban areas. However, limitations such as exclusion criteria of the surv…

The socioeconomic distribution of life expectancy and healthy life expectancy in Chile
The distribution of LE, QALE and HALEs in Chile shows a clear gradient favouring better-off populations that decreases over people ́s lives. Differences in LE favouring women contrast with differences in HALEs and QALEs which favour men, suggesting the need of implementing gender-focused policies to address the case-mix complexity. The magnitude of inequalities is greater than in other high-income countries and can be explained by structural soci…
The social and health protection of migrants in Chile
The 'Popular Initiative for Norms' was a non-binding participatory mechanism. Although the proposals sent through were not guaranteed to be included in the constitutional draft-and despite the final draft being rejected last September 2022-the platform allowed to gain insights into civilian opinions. Our findings showed that there is an incipient yet weak recognition of the rights and situation of migrants in Chile. There was no direct mention of…

Immigrants are categorized into Low, Medium and High SES through hierarchical cluster analysis. Around 1 per cent of the total…

Social status (SS) is a multidimensional variable that is used widely in health research. There is no single optimal method for estimating social status. Rather, in each case the measurement may vary depending on the research subject, the base theory considered, the population of interest, the event of interest and, in some cases, the available information. This literature review develops the following topics related to SS measurement, based on t…

Surveys that fail to identify these people are likely to misrepresent the experiences of immigrants and further quantitative and qualitative research is urgently required
Immigrant health workers in Chile
Most research on the phenomenon of "brain drain" (one-way flow of highly skilled/educated individuals) has focused on movement between the least developed and most highly developed countries. Therefore, the significance of patterns of migration to middle-income countries such as those in Latin America is less clear. The aim of this study was to outline key features of international health worker "brain drain" to Chile to promote discussion and fu…

La Compleja Relación Entre Posición Socioeconómica, Estatus Migratorio y Resultados de Salud
Using latent class analysis to develop a model of the relationship between socioeconomic position and ethnicity
LCA allows different aspects of an individual's SEP to be considered in one multidimensional indicator, which can then be integrated in epidemiological analyses. Ethnicity is strongly associated with these identified subgroups. Findings from this study suggest a careful use of SEP measures in health research, especially when looking at different ethnic groups. Further replication of these findings is needed in other populations
The Impact of Socioeconomic Inequality on Children’s Health and Well-Being
Child well-being is important for lifelong health and well-being. Although there is evidence linking social determinants of health (eg, relative poverty and income inequality) to child well-being, social and public health policy tends to focus on interventions to mitigate their effects, rather than remove the root causes. Children born into socioeconomically disadvantaged families suffer worse child well-being and its lifelong implications, in al…
