Auditing poverty? Applied anthropologists and the discourse of development in post-apartheid South Africa
This article debates the opportunities and disadvantages attached to applied anthropology, specifically consultancy linked to development work, within the institutions and processes of the modern neo-liberal state. This article deals with the practice of work on farms in the Sundays River Valley, a farming district located near the city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Situated on a historical frontier zone where land has been claimed by multiple generations of both farmers and farm workers, I analyse the incidence of paternalism and payment in kind on one particular farm in the district, with particular reference to ostrich wor…
Umgidi at the Mabambas
This article describes and analyses an umgidi, a celebratory feast that usually accompanies the final ‘coming out’ phase of circumcision, among farm workers in the Sundays River Valley, Eastern Cape. Anthropological monographs describing circumcision rituals among Xhosa-speakers appear not to discuss such a feast at all, despite this event being familiar to most rural and urban Xhosa-speakers, particularly in the western half of the Eastern Cape.…
Locality and Belonging in the Sundays River Valley
This paper explores an alternative notion of identity among farm workers in the Sundays River Valley, one that is connected more to memories of territorial loss and occupation in the area than with bounded ideas of group identity. These ideas of place and belonging stem from the occupation of ancestral land in the 19th century, but can also be associated with the gradual implementation of state conservation policies in the mid 20th century.
