  • Pooled testing of sputum with Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra during tuberculosis active case finding campaigns in Lao People’s Democratic Republic

Open Access•Vibol Iem, Phonenaly Chittamany et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

INTRODUCTION: Active case finding (ACF) of individuals with tuberculosis (TB) is a key intervention to find the 30% of people missed every year. However, ACF requires screening large numbers of individuals who have a low probability of positive results, typically <5%, which makes using the recommended molecular tests expensive. METHODS: We conducted two ACF surveys (in 2020 and 2021) in high TB burden areas of Lao PDR. Participants were screened …

  • Pooling sputum for Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert Ultra testing during the Covid-19 pandemic in Lao People’s Democratic Republic

Open Access•Vibol Iem, Phonenaly Chittamany et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

The global Covid-19 pandemic has limited access to molecular TB diagnostics and National Programmes are struggling to maintain essential services. The pooling method (testing several samples together) could reduce the number of cartridges and staff time needed for TB diagnosis but has not been tested within the pandemic. We conducted two independent cross-sectional surveys. Pools composed of four sputum samples were tested using either Xpert-MTB/…

  • Ethical issues in intervention studies on the prevention and management of diabetes and hypertension in sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Elizabeth Shayo, Elizabeth H Shayo et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

Conducting intervention studies in Africa, where medicines supply for chronic conditions is inequitable and patchy, raises major ethical issues. \n \nHere we discuss what should the ethical approach be for a research programme in terms of provision of a steady and sustainable supply of medicines for patients with diabetes and hypertension

  • Yield of household contact investigation of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Mubarek A Yassin, Kesetebirhan Delele Yirdaw et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

HHCs of index PTB+ cases have high risk of developing active TB. Long term follow-up of HHCs could help improve TB case finding depending on country contexts. Further studies on effectiveness and feasibility of the approach and integration in routine settings are needed

  • Sub-national prevalence survey of tuberculosis in rural communities of Ethiopia

Open Access•Daniel G Datiko, Ermias Amsalu Guracha et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The prevalence of smear positive TB varies by districts and is high in rural southern Ethiopia compared to the estimated national prevalence. More TB patients remain missed and unreached, impacting negatively on health outcomes. TB case finding approaches should be revisited and innovative approaches and tools to identify missing people with TB should be scaled up

  • Patient and community experiences of tuberculosis diagnosis and care within a community-based intervention in Ethiopia

Open Access•Olivia Tulloch, Sally Theobald et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

There is evidence rural populations with high levels of poverty, and in particular women, are at high risk of unmet health needs and undiagnosed TB. Embedding TB services within communities was an acceptable approach for vulnerable groups experiencing poor access to health facilities. In the Ethiopian context this approach can facilitate early diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes

  • Acute respiratory infections in children

Open Access•C Anthony Hart, Luís E Cuevas•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Saúde…•2007

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the leading cause of mortality in children under five years of age worldwide and most of these deaths are due to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Recent evidence from studies using genome detection systems such as polymerase chain reaction or micro-array technology show that, in most cases, these deaths are caused or precipitated by viruses. In this paper, the definitions of upper and lower respiratory tract inf…

  • Acceptability of the use of iron cooking pots to reduce anaemia in developing countries

Open Access•Paul Prinsen Geerligs, Bernard J Brabin et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2002

Objective: To evaluate acceptability, compliance and attitude towards the use of iron pots compared with aluminium pots, for cooking in a community that traditionaly did not use iron pots. Design: Randomised trial. Setting: Two rural Malawian villages. Subjects: Fifty-two households received iron pots and 61 aluminium pots. Results: Pot characteristics were assessed by a questionnaire after 3, 6, 11 and 20 weeks of use. Within households using ir…

  • Anemia and intestinal parasitic infections in primary school students in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil

    Open Access•Reiko Tsuyuoka, J Wendy Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•1999•Citada por: 10•Referências: 25

Anemia is estimated to affect half the school-age children and adolescents in developing countries. The main causes are parasitic infections, malaria, and low iron intake. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of anemia, parasitic infections, and nutritional status of children attending public primary schools in Aracaju, Northeast Brazil. Of 360 students, 26.7% were anemic, and prevalence was higher in children under 8 and over 15 years of …
