  • A terrestrial record of climate variation during MIS 11 through multiproxy palaeotemperature reconstructions from Hoxne, UK

    Open Access•David J Horne, Nick Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

A terrestrial (lacustrine and fluvial) palaeoclimate record from Hoxne (Suffolk, UK) shows two temperate phases separated by a cold episode, correlated with MIS 11 subdivisions corresponding to isotopic events 11.3 (Hoxnian interglacial period), 11.24 (Stratum C cold interval), and 11.23 (warm interval with evidence of human presence). A robust, reproducible multiproxy consensus approach validates and combines quantitative palaeotemperature recon…

  • A chironomid-based reconstruction of late glacial summer temperatures in the southern Carpathians (Romania)

    Open Access•Mónika Tóth, Enikő K Magyari et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Late glacial and early Holocene summer temperatures were reconstructed based on fossil chironomid assemblages at Lake Brazi (Retezat Mountains) with a joint Norwegian"Swiss transfer function, providing an important addition to the late glacial quantitative climate reconstructions from Europe. The pattern of the late glacial temperature changes in Lake Brazi show both similarities and some differences from the NGRIP δ 18 O record and other Europea…

  • Chironomids can be reliable proxies for Holocene temperatures. A comment on Velle et al. (2010)

    Open Access•Stephen J Brooks, Yarrow Axford et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012

Velle et al. (2010) discussed discrepancies between Scandinavian Holocene chironomid-inferred temperature estimates, which they attribute to the response of chironomids to environmental variables other than temperature and to taxonomic shortcomings. They suggest ways in which the reliability of chironomid-based paleotemperature reconstructions could be improved by taking into account ecological complexity. While we agree with many of their recomm…

  • Four thousand years of environmental change and human activity in the Cochabamba Basin, Bolivia

    Open Access•Joseph J Williams, Joseph W Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The Cochabamba Basin (Bolivia) is on the ancient road network connecting Andean and lowland areas. Little is known about the longevity of this trade route or how people responded to past environmental changes. The eastern end of the Cochabamba valley system constricts at the Vacas Lake District, constraining the road network and providing an ideal location in which to examine past human–environmental interactions. Multiproxy analysis of sediment …

  • Early-Holocene temperature variability inferred from chironomid assemblages at Hawes Water, northwest England

    Open Access•Barbara Lang, ALAN BEDFORD et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Citada por: 4•Referências: 19

This paper presents the first high-resolution chironomid-inferred mean July air temperature (C-IT) reconstruction for the early Holocene from England. The reconstruction is based on a core recovered from a terrestrialised carbonate bench at Hawes Water, a small hard-water lake in northwest England. The record shows that temperatures rose rapidly after the Younger Dryas with temperatures reaching 14.0°C at the beginning of the Holocene. Over mille…

  • A multiproxy palaeolimnological investigation of Holocene environmental change, between c. 10 700 and 7200 years BP, at Holebudalen, southern Norway

    Open Access•Virginia N Panizzo, Vivienne J Jones et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Referências: 22

Geochemical analyses (x-ray fluorescence, δ 13 C and C/N ratios) were used to reconstruct early Holocene environments (between 10685 and 7260 cal. yr BP) at a small lake near Holebudalen, southern Norway. Results show a period of increasing stability, with reduced catchment inwash (shown by titanium and potassium minerals), vegetation stabilization and increasing aquatic productivity (C/N ratios). However, periods of instability (loss on ignition…

  • Biotic response to rapid climatic changes during the Late Glacial

    Open Access•Brigitta Ammann, U Eicher et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2008•Referências: 1

Organisms can respond to rapid climatic changes in three ways: 1) adaptation by evolution, affecting physiology and morphology), 2) migration and population dynamics including biogeographical changes) and 3) extinction local or global). Here, the focus is on examples of the second type. Organisms, whether algae, trees, or animals, find their ecological niches in a multi- dimensional space of gradients such as temperature winter, summer, means or …

  • The Chironomidae of Gróthúsvatn, Sandoy, Faroe Islands

    Open Access•F J Gathorne-Hardy, Ian T Lawson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

Chironomids were examined as part of a multiproxy palaeolimnological study of Gróthúsvatn, Sandoy, Faroe Islands. A total of 37 taxa was found in the top 1 m of the core. Chironomid-inferred total phosphorus and temperature reconstructions indicate that after landnám (the Norse settlement period) total phosphorus levels rose slightly, then peaked at a temperature minimum (interpreted as the `Little Ice Age'). Total phosphorus levels subsequently …

  • Assessment of environmental impacts of active smelter operations and abandoned mines in Karabash, Ural Mountains of Russia

    Open Access•В Н Удачин, V Udachin et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2003

Industrialization in the former USSR caused widespread environmental damage, which is graphically illustrated in the South Urals mining region of west‐central Russia. One of the most heavily polluted areas is the town of Karabash and its surrounding area, which has abandoned mines and a large active copper smelter close to its centre. The area is affected by effluents and gaseous and particulate emissions from the smelter, acid drainage from aban…

  • Canadian Democracy

    John H Redekop, Stephen J Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•1996•Citada por: 2

In this revised and updated second edition, Canadian Democracy views the current problems and possibilities of Canada's body politic in the context both of Canadian history and of the experience of other representative democracies. It examines the societal context of politics, structures of governance such as constitution, parliament, executive federalism and the courts, political participation, and media influence. The author considers, as well,…

  • Power, globalization, and the end of the Cold War

    William Wohlforth, Stephen J Brooks

The end of the Cold War has become a case study of major importance for scholars of international relations for numerous reasons. Not least among these is that it helped spark a renaissance in the study of ideas in the aeld and contributed to the rise of constructivism as a major theoretical school in the 1990s.1 It has also proven to be a rich case for developing new arguments inspired by constructivist thinking, as well as for extending standar…
