Defining and Setting National Goals for Cardiovascular Health Promotion and Disease Reduction
This document details the procedures and recommendations of the Goals and Metrics Committee of the Strategic Planning Task Force of the American Heart Association, which developed the 2020 Impact Goals for the organization. The committee was charged with defining a new concept, cardiovascular health , and determining the metrics needed to monitor it over time. Overweight in Children and Adolescents
The prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents has dramatically increased. There may be vulnerable periods for weight gain during childhood and adolescence that also offer opportunities for prevention of overweight. Overweight in children and adolescents can result in a variety of adverse health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and the metabolic syndrome. The best approach to t…
Neighborhood of Residence and Incidence of Coronary Heart Disease
BACKGROUND: Where a person lives is not usually thought of as an independent predictor of his or her health, although physical and social features of places of residence may affect health and health-related behavior. METHODS: Using data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, we examined the relation between characteristics of neighborhoods and the incidence of coronary heart disease. Participants were 45 to 64 years of age at base li…
Relation of Cardiovascular Stress Reactivity to Left Ventricular Mass and Relative Wall Thickness in Hypertensives
s of Papers for 1999 Annual Meeting: Paper Session: Cardiovascular Activity in Relation to Stress Psychology and Neurobiology
HMO Membership and Patient Age and the Use of Specialty Care for Hospitalized Patients With Acute Stroke
BACKGROUND: The number of older patients enrolling in health maintenance organizations (HMOs) is increasing. Concerns have been raised that older patients may be targeted by HMOs for more stringent cost-containment mechanisms, including reduced access to expensive specialty care. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relationship between membership in an HMO and the decision to consult with a neurologist or admit to a neurology ward for patients hospit…
Trends in cigarette smoking
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe trends in the prevalence of cigarette smoking between 1980 through 1982 and 1990 through 1992 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. METHODS: Three population-based surveys were conducted among adults 25 to 74 years of age in 1980 through 1982, 1985 through 1987, and 1990 through 1992. RESULTS: Overall age-adjusted prevalences of cigarette smoking declined significantly between 1980-1982 and 1985-…
Gender and Ethnic Differences in Survival in a Cohort of HIV Positive Clients
European Americans entered treatment at a much earlier disease stage (as measured by CD4 positive T-lymphocyte counts) and had higher educational levels (a surrogate for socioeconomic status) than African Americans. These factors may explain the longer survival in European Americans as compared to African Americans in this cohort
