This paper focuses on the critical role of integrative leadership in inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) research programs. ITD programs have become one of academia’s responses to address contemporary sustainability challenges. Fulfilling the promise of such programs is extraordinarily challenging for all involved participants, but especially for program leaders who have to ensure that the perspectives of the involved program participants become t…
Present and future Köppen-Geiger climate classification maps at 1-km resolution
We present new global maps of the Köppen-Geiger climate classification at an unprecedented 1-km resolution for the present-day (1980–2016) and for projected future conditions (2071–2100) under climate change. The present-day map is derived from an ensemble of four high-resolution, topographically-corrected climatic maps. The future map is derived from an ensemble of 32 climate model projections (scenario RCP8.5), by superimposing the projected cl…
Enhanced response of global wetland methane emissions to the 2015–2016 El Niño-Southern Oscillation event
Wetlands are thought to be the major contributor to interannual variability in the growth rate of atmospheric methane (CH 4 ) with anomalies driven by the influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Yet it remains unclear whether (i) the increase in total global CH 4 emissions during El Niño versus La Niña events is from wetlands and (ii) how large the contribution of wetland CH 4 emissions is to the interannual variability of atmospher…
Climatologies at high resolution for the earth’s land surface areas
High-resolution information on climatic conditions is essential to many applications in environmental and ecological sciences. Here we present the CHELSA (Climatologies at high resolution for the earth’s land surface areas) data of downscaled model output temperature and precipitation estimates of the ERA-Interim climatic reanalysis to a high resolution of 30 arc sec. The temperature algorithm is based on statistical downscaling of atmospheric te…
Are forest disturbances amplifying or canceling out climate change-induced productivity changes in European forests
Recent studies projecting future climate change impacts on forests mainly consider either the effects of climate change on productivity or on disturbances. However, productivity and disturbances are intrinsically linked because 1) disturbances directly affect forest productivity (e.g. via a reduction in leaf area, growing stock or resource-use efficiency), and 2) disturbance susceptibility is often coupled to a certain development phase of the fo…
A framework for modeling adaptive forest management and decision making under climate change

Investigating the regional-scale pattern of agricultural land abandonment in the Swiss mountains
Agricultural land abandonment and natural forest re-growth in the Swiss mountains
Novel methods improve prediction of species’ distributions from occurrence data
Prediction of species’ distributions is central to diverse applications in ecology, evolution and conservation science. There is increasing electronic access to vast sets of occurrence records in museums and herbaria, yet little effective guidance on how best to use this information in the context of numerous approaches for modelling distributions. To meet this need, we compared 16 modelling methods over 226 species from 6 regions of the world, c…
