  • A community-based breast cancer screening program for medically underserved women

Open Access•Clyde B Mccoy, Margaret Pereyra et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2004

Participation in the EDP increases the likelihood of early detection of breast cancer and reduces the hazard of death for medically underserved women in the Miami-Dade County area of Florida. Interestingly, white Hispanics showed a better survival than did both African-Americans and white non-Hispanics. Our research also demonstrates the value of utilizing existing cancer registry data to evaluate a community-based program such as the EDP

  • Welfare and Work Outcomes after Substance Abuse Treatment

Lisa R Metsch, Margaret Pereyra et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2003•Citada por: 5

Employment and welfare outcomes are investigated for women who received both welfare and substance abuse treatment in Florida from 1994 to 1999. By linking information from three statewide administrative databases, we identify 4,236 women who meet both criteria. Over the study period, there was a significant increase in the proportion of women moving from welfare to work. Predictors of posttreatment employment include demographic characteristics,…

  • High risk sexual behaviours among heroin sniffers who have no history of injection drug use

J Sánchez, José Javier Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2002

The purpose of this paper is to assess sexual behaviours which place heroin sniffers (HSs) at high risk for HIV infection. A stratified network-based sample was used to recruit HSs who had no history of injection drug use was recruited from the streets of South Florida, USA. HSs displayed a high HIV seroprevalence rate of 12.1%; women (18.1%) were more likely than men (8.7%) to test positive for HIV. Both men and women HSs engaged in considerable…

  • Consequences and Costs of Closing a Publicly Funded Methadone Maintenance Clinic

    Open Access•Pierre K Alexandre, Helena J Salomé et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2002

Objective . We examine volunteering to support the relief effort after the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building. We address two issues: (1) how widespread was volunteering and what forms did it take, and (2) does Wilson and Musick’s (1997a) “integrated theory of volunteer work” help to explain variation in volunteering in this disaster situation? Methods . We use data from the 1996 Oklahoma City Survey (OKC Survey). The 1996 OKC Survey is based…

  • Crack smokers' intention to use condoms with loved partners

    Angela Bowen, A M Bowen et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2001

Prevalence rates of HIV infection acquired through heterosexual contacts have risen steadily since 1982. Crack cocaine smokers are at particular risk of HIV infection due to heterosexual exposure. HIV risk reduction interventions seeking to increase condom use among drug users have met with minimal success, and there is a need for interventions to be strongly grounded in psychosocial models of behaviour change. This study presents the results of …

Shenghan Lai, Jie Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2000

This preliminary study collected data from 326 heroin users in Guangxi Province, China, in 1997. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors for injection. Survival analysis identified factors independently associated with time from initiation of heroin use to adoption of injection. Four factors were independently associated with injection: number of friends who used heroin in the last year, duration of heroin use, dos…

  • Injection drug users' practices and attitudes toward intervention and potential for reducing the transmission of HIV

    Clyde B Mccoy, Lisa R Metsch et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•1997•Citada por: 7•Referências: 24

Miami is one of the major centers of illegal drug activity and has a significant proportion of AIDS cases among injection drug users (IDUs). Since Needle Exchange Programs (NEP) are illegal and therefore do not exist in the state of Florida, other strategies must play a large role in reducing the transmission of HIV among IDUs. In order to effectively communicate with IDUs about needle safety, it is necessary to understand the practices and cultu…

Needle/syringe combinations were collected from three shooting galleries in South Florida and tested for the presence of antibodies to HIV-1. Fifteen of 148 needles (10.1 percent) tested positive for HIV-1 antibody. Seropositivity rates did not vary by the day of the week of collection, nor by shooting gallery from which they were collected. When the needle appeared to contain blood residue, 20.0 percent were positive versus 5.1 percent with no b…

In spite of efforts to dissuade intravenous drug users (IVDUs) from donating or selling blood, some continue to do so. As part of a longitudinal study, 915 IVDUs in South Florida were interviewed concerning their history of donation or sale of blood and tested for antibodies to HIV-1 and HTLV-I/II. Approximately 17 percent had either donated or sold blood during 1985 through 1988; most contributors (80.4 percent) sold to commercial blood services…

  • High-Risk Sex Behavior Among Young Street-Recruited Crack Cocaine Smokers in Three American Cities

Brian R Edlin, Kathleen L Irwin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1992

Since crack cocaine appeared in urban areas in the United States in the mid-1980s, reports have suggested that crack smokers may be at increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including infection with HIV, because they have multiple sex partners, trade sex for money or drugs, and rarely use condoms. A cross-sectional survey is being conducted in urban neighborhoods in Miami, New York and San Francisco--where crack use is common--to…

This study was designed to recruit two groups of approximately equal size: persons who reported current use of crack cocaine three or more times per week, and those who had never used crack. Participants (N = 641) we…

  • Crack Use and Correlates of Use in a National Population of Street Heroin Users

Duane C Mcbride, James A Inciardi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1992

Traditionally, researchers and clinicians have viewed street heroin users as representing an end point in a drug-using career. It is toward this population that major national treatment efforts have been directed. Concomitant with the historical national concern about heroin use has been concern about the increase in crack cocaine use. There has been speculation that crack use may have become a substitute for the higher risk of heroin injection. …

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: The smoking of "crack" cocaine is thought to be associated with high-risk sexual practices that accelerate the spread of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We studied 2323 young adults, 18 to 29 years of age, who smoked crack regularly or who had never smoked crack. The study participants, recruited from the streets of inner-city neighborhoods in New York, Miami, and San Francisco, were interviewed and …
